Rise and fall of history
As early as before reclamation, Kanggong Temple stood on the Bank of the bay. In the past, markets in Macao were mostly concentrated near temples where people gathered, or beside the external traffic routes in the city. Due to the location of Kanggong temple, ships berthed in the open space in front of the temple to load and unload goods, which led this area to become a commercial distribution center. In addition, in the early days, markets all started from the front of the temple, and attracted people to gather through the temple's prosperous incense. Therefore, in the past, there were many vendors in the front of Kanggong temple, with a wide range of goods, including snacks, haircuts, barbershops, and so on Fortune telling and other stalls. Until 20 or 30 years ago, the area in front of Kanggong temple and around Wuri street in early October were still prosperous districts in Macao. Only in the past decade, with the construction of new casinos one by one, the advantages of this area were gradually replaced by new business districts inside and outside the new casinos, and gradually declined. In 2017, the "Kanggong night market" sponsored by the Southern District Federation of industry and Commerce of Macao central region was opened. Since then, it has been held every year with the theme of "trendy, fun and good food". It is the first mobile night market in Macao, covering a section of 5th Street in October from Xinma road to Kanggong temple.
Origin and legend
There are two kangzhenjun temples in Macao. One is located on October 5th Street, and the other is on the side of Puji Buddhist temple on the main road of the US Deputy General. The former is still open to the outside world, while the latter has been transformed into a neighborhood association. Kangzhenjun temple, located on October 5th Street, is said to be originated from a wooden statue of King Kang floating in the water. Residents will pick it up and build ancestral temples nearby, and
During the reign of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty (1851-1861), the temple was built with funds raised by the local people, and then expanded to its present scale. There was a school of righteousness in the temple to cultivate poor students, but it was stopped later. In the past, the temple also set up a shed every year to invite the troupe to perform the Shengong opera, but in recent years, it has stopped. Introduction to scenic spots
October 5th Street
Rue de Cinco de outubro is located in the west of Macao Peninsula. The north end is at the junction of dadmeidiaoshnadi road and seaside road in shalitou, and the south end is jiehuochuantou street.
In early October, the fifth street was formerly known as Simeng street, which originated from the demolished Simeng wharf. In the early October of the past, the fifth street used to belong to the Bay shoal. Later, after reclamation, it gradually became an inland street. From the names of the streets nearby, such as Tai Tau Street and new reclamation street, we can also imagine the geographical features of the old days. In memory of the Portuguese revolution on October 5, 1910, the Australian and Portuguese government later renamed it "October 5 Street".
The fifth street in early October is a typical Macao street, located in the political center of Macao
It used to be a prosperous and famous street in Macao. 1、 The origin of the name of the fifth street in early October
I believe many local old neighborhoods will know that the nickname of "Fifth Street in October" is "zhe Meng Street", which is derived from the zhe Meng wharf demolished due to reclamation there. Nowadays, many old residents still call it this way. At the beginning of October, the area where WuJie street is located originally belonged to Beiwan and Qianwan more than 100 years ago. The waterway was tortuous. Later, it was reclaimed into land, and the waterway was straightened. A passenger ship wharf was built on the shore. The wharf is mostly a combination of offices and ticket offices. Every time there is a shortage of passengers and freight, it will be very crowded. The inner harbor used to be the hub of Macao's external maritime transportation. The passenger and freight ships to the mainland, Hong Kong and outlying islands would be concentrated here. It was also the harbor of fishing boats, which led to the economic development of the fifth street in early October, making it one of the prosperous streets in Macao at that time.
At the beginning of October, the fifth street used to be called Rua novadel REI in Portuguese. In Lisbon, Portugal, Rua nova is an important commercial Avenue, which is the trading center of Asian commodities. As the business street pattern of Macao's Fifth Street in October is similar to that of Lisbon, the fifth street in October is called new king street. Now the name of the fifth street in October is to commemorate the exile of Manuel II, his father and brother's assassination, and the national day of Portugal's overthrow of the monarchy and establishment of the Republic on October 5, 1910. Therefore, the name of the fifth street in October is changed to the fifth street in October.
2、 Historical vicissitudes of the fifth street in early October
In the eyes of the older generation, the fifth street in October was a street that accompanied them to grow up. In this street, they left many memories and footprints
Forty or fifty years ago or even earlier, the inner harbour area was the most prosperous. From morning to evening to late at night, there were a lot of people on the waterfront to the fifth street in early October. All major industries set up shop numbers here, most of which were seafood grocery stores and change shops. Residents of Macao and other villages nearby also came to visit, making 5th Street a busy economic activity area in early October. Before Xinma road divided it into two parts, this important traffic road connected Sha Li Tou, which is located in the northwest of neigang, outside the city wall, with the center of Chinatown. It was once considered as one of the longest streets in Australia, but it was gradually forgotten with the development of the city.
Industry development of 5th Street in early October
In early October, the area near 5th Street is the settlement of Macao residents. In addition, it is close to the inner harbor and has convenient land and water transportation, which makes the residents of Macao and its adjacent areas come to shop. Therefore, the goods sold here are diverse and cheap
. According to some old neighborhoods, before the fifth street in October, there were many stalls besides shops. Besides, there were also hawkers selling vegetables, fruits and daily necessities. In addition, there were stalls selling incense, rice and haircuts for people. Pedestrians were flowing all the time. They were one of the prosperous streets in Macao. Unfortunately, time has changed, and now many famous shops have been built It's a pity that the famous teahouses of the six kingdoms and xinglinzhuang distillery were closed down for various reasons. However, Luo Yongji hall, which is now located on the fifth street in early October, is the only herbal tea shop in Macao that operates in the old style. In addition, an old woman is pushing a cart to sell zongzi near the fifth street in early October
