Former site of Jinling Women's University
Located at 122 Ninghai Road, Gulou District, Nanjing, Jinling Women's University is the first women's University in China. It was founded in 1915 by seven churches, including the American Christian Church, Presbyterian Church and London church. It is an oriental complex of Chinese and Western architecture, known as "the most beautiful campus in the East".
In December 2017, it was listed as China's 20th century architectural heritage.
Historical evolution
In the fourth year of the Republic of China (1915), when Jinling Women's University opened, it was initially located in Lijia garden, Xiuhua lane, Nanjing. Since then, the president Mrs. debenkang planned to build a new campus in Suiyuan area of Ninghai Road.
In 1922, the school was built on Ninghai Road.
In 1923, the campus of Jinling Women's University was completed and jinnu moved in. At this time, six classical Chinese palace buildings were completed: No. 100 (conference building, 1431 square meters), No. 200 (Science Museum, 1541 square meters), No. 300 (Literature Museum, 1492 square meters), No. 400-700 (three student dormitories, 4603 square meters).
In 1924, another student dormitory was built.
In 1934, the library (1397 square meters) and auditorium (1444 square meters) were built.
From 1937 to 1945, he moved to Chengdu for classes during the Anti Japanese war. Jinling Women's University has set up 16 fourth grade subjects, including Chinese, English, history, society, music, sports, chemistry, biology, home economics and medical specialties, and enjoys a good reputation at home and abroad. From 1919 to 1951, 999 people graduated, known as 999 roses.
In 1952, the former Jinling Women's University and the normal college of Nanjing University merged into Nanjing Normal College, and Jinling Women's University Suiyuan became the campus of Nanjing Normal University.
In May 2006, the buildings of Jinling Women's University were listed as national key cultural relics protection units by the State Council.
In December 2017, it was listed as the second batch of Chinese 20th century architectural heritage.
architectural composition
The complex of Suiyuan Jinling Women's University was designed by American architect Henry Murphy and Chinese architect LV Yanzhi, and built by Chen Mingji construction factory. The whole campus building of Jinling Women's University makes full use of the trend of natural topography. It is arranged according to the east-west direction, with the conference building as the central axis and the north-south and left-right sides. The layout is neat and the plane is symmetrical. The building takes the wide lawn as the center, and the modeling is the traditional Chinese palace architectural style.
Suiyuan is symmetrically arranged along the east-west axis. The entrance adopts a tree avenue to enhance the depth of the space. The main building is symmetrically arranged with the big lawn as the center. A garden with an artificial lake as the center is designed behind building 100. The western end of the central axis ends at the Chinese style Pavilion at the commanding height of the hill (Xishan). The architectural style adopts the traditional Chinese palace style, the building materials and structure adopt the advanced reinforced concrete upper structure, and the buildings are connected by the Chinese classical veranda. The Chinese and Western architectural styles have reached the organic unity here. It is the Oriental architectural complex combining Chinese and Western styles, known as "the most beautiful campus in the East".
