The Ming Tombs reservoir is located in Changping District of Beijing, in the southeast of the Ming Tombs basin, 40 kilometers away from the urban area of Beijing.
The Ming Tombs reservoir was built by Mao Zedong in 1958 and successfully completed on June 30 of that year. The area of the reservoir is 20 times that of Kunming Lake in the summer palace, with a total storage capacity of more than 60 million cubic meters. The dam is built between Mang Mountain and Hanbao mountain. It is of inclined wall type, with a total length of 627 meters, a height of 29 meters, a bottom width of 179 meters and a top width of 7.5 meters. On the outer slope of the dam, there are five big characters of "Ming Tombs Reservoir" inscribed by Chairman Mao Zedong. They are inlaid with white marble stones on the purple andesite slope protection, which is very spectacular. At the top of the dam, a beautiful corridor with classical architectural style is built, in which there are handicraft goods, cold drink shop, snack bar and so on. There are boat docks at both ends of the dam to provide convenience for tourists.
Shisanling reservoir is a mountainous basin reservoir, covering an area of 751 hectares, including 440 hectares of land and 311 hectares of water. Mountains stand around the reservoir, especially the towering Mang Mountain on the north bank. The broad water surface reflects the mountains, giving people the feeling of "high gorge out of Pinghu". At the junction of the foot of the mountain and the water surface, there are many bays and branches, which are quiet and pleasant.
In the middle and upper reaches of the reservoir, there are large terraces and slopes on both sides of the reservoir. The water surface is stable and the water depth changes little. The water surface is affected by the width, water depth and different environmental colors, showing different landscape effects. For example, near the dam, the mountain is high and deep, and the water surface reflects the shadow of the mountain. In the upper reaches of the reservoir, the water surface is wide, the bank slope is gentle, and the field of vision is wide. The orchards and mausoleums dotted between the distant mountains and rivers add a layer of uncertain hazy color.
