The former site of the National Art Gallery is located at 266 Changjiang Road, Xuanwu District, Nanjing city. It is a national key cultural relic protection unit. The predecessor of Jiangsu Provincial Art Gallery, which was built in 1936, represents the official start of the cause of China's art gallery. In 1960, it was named Jiangsu Provincial Art Gallery and is still in use today.

On November 24, 2018, the former site of the National Gallery of fine arts was selected as "the third batch of Chinese 20th century architectural heritage projects".

Historical evolution
At the beginning of the founding of the Republic of China, many cultural celebrities such as Lu Xun and Cai Yuanpei began to propose the establishment of the National Art Museum. Xu Beihong, Liu Haisu, Lin Fengmian and other early art educators and famous painters also ran around and called for it.
In March 1935, under the impetus of strong public opinion, the national government finally officially passed the proposal to prepare for the construction of the national art gallery. It was presumed that 19 political figures, including Yu Youren, Kong Xiangxi, Chen Lifu, Ju Zheng, Sun Ke, Chu Minyi and so on, formed a strong Preparatory Committee. The architectural design of the National Gallery of fine arts is based on the selection of 14 national design schemes and the combination of the advantages of the first, second and third prize design schemes.
In November 1935, the foundation of the National Gallery of fine arts was laid.
In August 1936, the National Gallery of fine arts was completed.
In April 1937, "the second national art exhibition" was held.

In 1945, after the victory of the Anti Japanese War, the KMT government was busy with the civil war, the economy was extremely poor, and it did not pay attention to the cultural construction. Therefore, this building has been neglected and even used for other purposes.
In 1949, after the founding of new China, the people's Government of Jiangsu Province prepared to build "Jiangsu folk arts and crafts exhibition room" on the basis of the original national art gallery in 1954, and opened it to the public on October 1 of the same year.
In June 1956, we began to prepare for the construction of "Jiangsu Art Gallery", which gradually restored the social functions of the building.
In September 1960, Jiangsu Provincial Art Gallery was officially renamed as "Jiangsu Provincial Art Gallery". The focus of its work is to organize art works exhibition, carry out art creation and cultural exchange. There are creation rooms in the gallery, which are engaged in print, comic book, oil painting and sculpture creation. Since then, it has become an art palace to show the achievements of contemporary art, promote the popularization of art and carry out the education of beauty. Since the establishment of Jiangsu Provincial Art Gallery in 1956 to the ten years before and after the "Cultural Revolution", more than 100 domestic and foreign art exhibitions have been held, which also played an important role in cultivating talents and cultural exchanges. Jiangsu Provincial Art Museum has not only made outstanding contributions to the prosperity of Jiangsu's art cause, but also laid a solid foundation for the development of new China's art museum cause.

The main building of the National Gallery of fine arts has four floors. The facade is in the shape of "mountain". It has a simple, solemn, elegant and generous appearance. The main building of the art museum and the "Great Hall of the people" on the west side are designed and constructed together. The National Gallery of fine arts covers an area of 4700 square meters, with a building area of 7000 square meters and an exhibition area of 2400 square meters. There are three large exhibition halls, each of which is 550 square meters and an exhibition line of 160 meters. There are four small exhibition halls, each of which is 170 square meters and an exhibition line of 35 meters. The height of the exhibition line is 3.3 meters.
