Memorial Hall of the Beijing Office of the Eighth Route Army
The Beijing Office of the Eighth Route Army was the first open office set up by our party and our army in the capital of the Kuomintang government during the second cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. Although it existed for a short time, it made indelible contributions to publicizing the Anti Japanese ideas and strengthening the strength of our party and our army. There is a quiet alley in the northeast corner of Nanjing Drum Tower. At the end of the alley is a small and quiet courtyard with a two-story brick and wood structure. It is the residence of Mr. Zhang Boling, former president of Nankai University. Zhou Enlai, Zhu De and Ye Jianying, representatives of the CPC Central Committee and the Red Army, were invited to attend. Finally, the main force of the Red Army was reorganized into the Eighth Route Army of the National Revolutionary Army (the 18th group army according to the fighting sequence in September), and Chiang Kai Shek agreed to set up the Beijing Office of the Eighth Route Army in Nanjing.

historical background
In December 1936, after the peaceful settlement of the Xi'an Incident, from the middle of February to the middle of July of the following year, CPC representatives Zhou Enlai, Bo Gu (Qin bangxian), Ye Jianying and Lin Boqu successively held four negotiations with Kuomintang representatives Gu Zhutong, Zhang Chong, Jiang Jieshi and Song Ziwen in Xi'an, Hangzhou and Lushan. On August 9, 1937, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De and Ye Jianying, representatives of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Red Army, were invited to attend the National Defense Conference in Nanjing. At the same time, they continued to negotiate with the Kuomintang and agreed to reorganize the Red Army into the eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army. On August 19, Zhou Enlai and Zhu De flew back to Shaanxi. Ye Jianying, as the representative of the Eighth Route Army in Beijing and Tong Xiaopeng, Secretary of the Eighth Route Army, stayed in Nanjing to set up the Beijing Office of the Eighth Route Army. Tong Xiaopeng was responsible for the confidential work. In late August, the CPC Central Committee sent Comrade Li Kenong, who worked in Shanghai, to Nanjing as the director of the office, and sent Qian Zhiguang, who had just returned from Shanghai to Yan'an, to take charge of military supplies and finance. In early September, the representative of the CPC Central Committee, Bo Gu, led Qi Guang, Wu Zhijian, Kang Yimin and Li Bai to Nanjing. Qi Guang was in charge of documents and procurement; Wu Zhijian was the deputy; Li Bai was the telegraph operator; Kang Yimin was the interpreter. Since August 18, the Kuomintang has released political prisoners held in various prisons in Nanjing. The released Huang Wenjie, Liu Shunyuan, Li Shinong, Liu Ningyi, Qian Ying, Yu Ping, Xia Zhixu and others remained in the office to examine the released political prisoners.
The office was originally located in the residence of Zhang Boling, President of Nankai University. It was rented because Zhang Boling had a teacher-student relationship with Zhou Enlai. This is a two-story western style house with an attic. It faces south and is of brick and wood structure. It has a width of 13.99 meters, a depth of 10.54 meters and a building area of 270 square meters. Surrounded by high walls, a small room on the left of the gate entrance is the reception room, in which Li Yingji lives as a mailman; behind the building is a row of small bungalows, which are the kitchen and canteen of the office staff. In this building, there are Qian Zhiguang, Qi Guang and Yuan Chaojun's offices at the entrance downstairs, a living room at the entrance, two rooms facing south, one outside is Comrade Li Kenong's office, and the other inside is Comrade Ye Jianying's office. On the second floor, there is Comrade Bogu's office, which is the reception hall; on the south facing two rooms, one is Comrade Ye Jianying's bedroom, and the other is Qian Zhiguang and Qi Guang's dormitory. The third floor attic is where Tong Xiaopeng and Kang Yimin work and rest. In the northwest corner behind the building is the mimeograph room. Comrades Dong Biwu and Ye Ting once lived here when they were in Nanjing.
The office is located at No. 29 of Gaoloumen (now No. 29 of gaoyunling). It also rents a two-story Western-style building with a north facing south. It is of brick and wood structure. It is called "the residence of the director" to the outside. Bogu, Liao Chengzhi, Zhang Yuexia and others once lived in it.
Because the house is not enough to live in, the office rented a bungalow in Xiliuwan No.1, with a total of five rooms. There is a small garden in front of the bungalow, and a small house behind the bungalow, which can be used for kitchen and bath. Huang Wenjie, Liu Shunyuan, Wang Heshou, Qian Ying, Fang Yi, Yu Ping, Xia Zhixu and others live there.
