It is said that in ancient times, the "tiger shape" of watering appeared. At the foot of the mountain is the Dagu pool. The water is clear and deep, and the light is as bright as a reef. In the quiet of green mountains and green waters, there is a blue pool. It is said that the seven fairies came down here to bathe, so they are called "fairy Yao pool" and have the historic site of "fairy bathtub". It is also said that Lu Dongbin, the eight immortals, once steered the colorful auspicious clouds and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. He left behind the footprints of Lu Xianweng, known as "immortal footprints". history
The predecessor of Foguang temple is Xuande ancient temple. According to historical records, in the 25th year of ningzong (1219) of Southern Song Dynasty, Cai family of Shandong migrated to the foot of Huangguang mountain. In the first year of Baoyou (1253) of Southern Song Dynasty, a temple named "Xuande ancient temple" was built on the hillside of huangtenggang, where Da Dian, an eminent monk of Tang Dynasty, traveled. At the beginning of its establishment, the temple was simple and crude. It was repaired many times in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and gradually improved. The original temple sits in the north and south, with its back on the Nanshan Mountain and facing the deep valley. In front of the temple, there are two 6-meter-high stone walls: the temple is solemn, with flying eaves in the air, carved beams and painted buildings in the temple. The front and rear halls are dedicated to Sakyamuni Buddha and Maitreya Buddha, and two rows of wing rooms are on both sides. The temple is exquisitely constructed and full of fragrance.
There are Ming Dynasty copper coins, imperial edicts, cliff carvings and other precious cultural relics in the temple. In front of the temple, there is a wide field for Wuju people in Huiyi of Qing Dynasty to practice martial arts. During the agrarian revolution and the Anti Japanese War, Xuande ancient temple was also used as the underground base of the Communist Party of China. But since the end of Qing Dynasty, due to the influence of wars and political movements, Xuande temple has been in disrepair and dilapidated for a long time.
In the 1980s, Chen Liangcun and Huang naicheng raised funds for expansion and comprehensive restoration. The temple is divided into front seat and back seat. The front seat is the mountain gate and front hall, with left and right rooms; the back seat is the main hall. There are bell tower and Drum Tower on both sides of the main hall, and there are double decker boxes outside. The building area of the temple will be expanded to 1500 square meters. On February 8, 1985, Huilai County People's Government (huifudi No.10 document) announced that it was the third batch of key historical relics protection units. In 1990, it was rated as "two advanced units of civilization construction" by Shantou Religious Bureau. In 1992, the marble statue of Sakyamuni (also known as "Burmese Han jade statue of Sakyamuni") created and welcomed by abbot chuanzheng from Myanmar was worshipped in Qiancheng. In 1988, Huilai County People's Government approved it as an open place for Buddhist activities. There are eight monks and nuns in the temple.
In 1992, Huilai people's government listed Xuande ancient temple in huangguangshan as a religious tourist attraction. In the same year, Shi chuanzheng, a great master of Nanhua Chan temple in Shaoguan, Huilai County, was specially hired to be the abbot of Xuande ancient temple in huangguangshan. After the implementation of the national religious policy, especially after the great monk Chuan Zheng was appointed as the host of Foguang temple, the 730 year old Foguang Temple ushered in the era of the fastest development since its establishment.
It is said that monk Zhengda is planning to expand the temple. Referring to the famous monasteries in China, experts are invited to design and expand the scope of monasteries to more than 720 mu. According to the implementation of the construction of Buddhist temples, it is planned to build the main hall, Tianwang hall, dicangwang hall, Guanyin Pavilion, Zhaitang, bell tower and other halls and temple buildings, and build high slope uphill road, direct to the temple, and build parking lot. The halls, temples and their supporting facilities have begun to take shape.
At the beginning of 1992, the main mountain at the back of the temple radiated Buddhist light at night. According to the legend, monk Zhengda proposed that a great Buddha could be set up on the mountain to shine on all the people. Yuan Wenjin, a resident of Shenzhen, went to the mountain to worship. He was so happy and praised that he was called rare that he donated money and planned to install a standing statue of the Great Buddha on the top of Huangguang mountain. After months of material selection and geological exploration, a foundation laying ceremony was held in the autumn of that year. Shi Yunfeng, President of the Guangdong Buddhist Association, visited Huangguang mountain to attend the foundation laying ceremony. He climbed to the top of the mountain and chanted a poem: "the bodhi tree planted on the mountain of Foguang shares the dripping water of Caoxi, and his heart has moved to build a high platform for spreading the Dharma." After three years of construction, the project of erecting the statue of the Great Buddha was fully completed, and the inauguration ceremony of the Great Buddha was held on November 12, 1997. According to master shichuanzheng's proposal, the completed Buddha statue is honored as "Buddha light Buddha". As a result, the Xuande ancient temple in huangguangshan was renamed "huangguangshan Foguang Temple".
In 2004, Foguang temple was rated as "civilized religious activity site of Guangdong provincial Party committee" by the Provincial Ethnic and Religious Committee. In October 2005, at the invitation of Huilai Buddhist Association and monks in the temple, the abbot of Nanhua temple, monk Chuan Zhengda, officially presided over Foguang temple.
