Dongya bell tower is also known as "Youming Bell Pavilion". Built in the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, it is located on the top of doujiyan peak. It was rebuilt in 1983. It is a hexagonal two-story pavilion with a huge Youming ancient clock weighing 3 tons hanging on the bottom. Some monks live in the pavilion and strike the clock day and night. Whenever monks strike a bell to pray, the bell sounds like a roar in the sky, shaking in all directions and ringing for tens of miles.

In ancient times, there was a saying that "the bell of Dongya sounds like a pestle, and the sound of ninety-nine peaks is heard.". After opening up to the outside world, the Jiuhua Mountain Buddhist Association restored the chime system of the Youming clock. Two monks chimed the clock day and night in turn, all the year round. Now it's fashionable to strike the bell, so visitors and pilgrims are required to wait in line. Overseas Chinese listen to the chimes of the nether world through mobile phones and program-controlled telephones, praying for fortune and peace. In 1999, Mr. Chen, an overseas Chinese from Singapore, called Zhongting on a seagoing ship to the United States and asked to hit 108 Youming bells for him. Three days later, Mr. Chen called again and said that he had heard the sound of planting the day before yesterday. This time he arrived safely and his business was smooth. He would come back to Jiuhua Mountain to thank Master again. Overseas Chinese living in the United States, Britain, Malaysia, Canada and other places often call the Bell Pavilion in front of the plane or at sea and ask the master to hit the Youming clock for them. Mr. Chen, the chairman of Shenzhen real estate development company, had a stomach operation. Before anesthesia, he listened to the bell of 108 pestle in Jiuhuashan by mobile phone and telephone, and the operation was successful. Is the dark clock so smart? There is a scientific truth to this. Folk cloud: "smell the bell, worry light, wisdom long, Bodhisattva life." When I hear the bell, I feel happy and everything goes well. There is a famous couplet in front of the Zhongting gate: "eight hundred pestle bells awaken the dream, five thousand words of wisdom can break the Zen." The horizontal inscription is "boundless Buddhism". The times have changed, and people's ideas have changed. Now tourists do not care about and study the meaning of the couplet, but are keen to explore the ancient, explore the secluded and enjoy the scenery here. Ringing and listening to the bell is not only a belief, but also a pleasure. Although the Bell Pavilion is small, it has become a gospel in the hearts of countless believers.
