School history
Guangzhou Lingnan University (Gezhi Academy)
In 1888, the American Presbyterian church founded an institution of higher learning in Guangzhou called Christian College in China. This university is the predecessor of Lingnan University, which has been back in Hong Kong for more than 40 years. On March 28th of that year, Gezhi college officially taught, with only 30 students in the first group.
In 1893, Gezhi college broke away from the Presbyterian Church of the United States and set up another board of Trustees of the Christian College in New York, becoming a Christian University that did not belong to any church. At that time, China's political situation was troubled, and Gezhi Academy was owned by foreign churches, which inevitably became the object of harassment by xenophobic elements. In 1900, Shi Jianru, who once studied in Gezhi academy, failed to assassinate the governor of Guangdong and Guangxi, and Gezhi academy attracted the attention of the Qing government. In order to avoid being involved in the political vortex, Gezhi academy moved to Macao for temporary refuge.
In 1903, Gezhi college was renamed Canton Christian College, and its Chinese name was also changed to Lingnan School, which was the beginning of using Lingnan as its name. During his stay in Macao, Lingnan School once considered moving to Kowloon.
In 1904, Lingnan College decided to move back to Guangzhou, and bought more than 30 acres of land in Kangle village, Henan Province, Guangzhou, to become the permanent campus of Lingnan University in the future.
With the opening of the permanent school site, Lingnan School is developing rapidly. In 1911, Stu Wei, an alumnus, was inspired by the North view of the recreational campus and designed an interesting school emblem. The top half of the round school emblem is Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou; across it is the Pearl River, with lush litchi trees on its south bank; the bottom half is the winding water of the recreational campus, full of poetic flavor. This round school emblem has been used up to now after many subtle modifications. In addition, at that time, when Lingnan students participated in the Provincial Games, the school flag used by the cheerleading team was red with two big gray characters "Lingnan" printed on it. Since then, "red" and "gray" have become the pronouns of Lingnan spirit.
In September 1912, the Chinese name of the school was changed to "Lingnan School", while the English name remained unchanged.
In 1918, Lingnan University finally developed a complete set of university courses and awarded degree certificates to three graduates who completed the courses that year. At this time, 15 famous universities in the United States, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Stanford, and Toronto in Canada, officially accepted Lingnan graduates for postgraduate courses. This is an important milestone in the history of Lingnan.
In 1926, the national government promulgated the regulations for private schools to prohibit foreigners from running universities in China, and Lingnan schools were also banned. Lingnan School then set up a Chinese dominated school board to replace the New York Board of directors, and was ready to let the Chinese take over the management of the school.
In January 1927, the school board elected Zhong Rongguang as its president and Li Yinglin as its vice president, who had been assisting the school's affairs, to launch a new page of Chinese leadership in Lingnan. Lingnan University was officially renamed Lingnan University, and its English name was correspondingly changed to Lingnan University. Lingnan University then filed a petition with the national government in March of, and determined it as an international private Christian University. Zhong Rongguang is good at dancing and has great courage. He laid a good foundation for Lingnan when he was in charge of school administration. From 1927 to the eve of the Anti Japanese War, Lingnan University set up agricultural college, business school, engineering school, medical school and other departments in its original liberal arts and Sciences; it also set up secondary schools, primary schools, overseas Chinese classes and other affiliated organizations; and set up Lingnan branch in Hong Kong, becoming an important educational institution in southern China.
During the Anti Japanese War, many famous Chinese colleges and universities followed the national government to move to the West. Lingnan University is a private university and has no plans to follow the government. Before the fall of Guangzhou, Lingnan University decided to move to Hong Kong for further development. As a matter of fact, as early as 1937, the secondary school affiliated to Lingnan University had taken classes in Liangyuan, Castle Peak Bay, Hong Kong.
In the middle of August 1938, Lingnan University moved to Hong Kong at one stroke, borrowing the University of Hong Kong's campus to continue teaching; the Agricultural College rented the farm in Lanti, Tuen Mun. At that time, with the resumption of classes and transfer students from other universities, the number of Lingnan University Students in Hong Kong reached as high as 90% in the Guangzhou period.
In December 1941, when Hong Kong was occupied, Li Yinglin, then president of Lingnan University, led the teachers and students of Lingnan University to flee to Shaoguan in northern Guangdong. With the help of the national government and the American foundation, Lingnan University finally resumed its campus in Qujiang village and named it Lingda village. Later, as the war spread, Lingnan University had to move from Qujiang to Meizhou in Dongjiang.
After the victory of the Anti Japanese war in 1945, Lingnan University returned to the recreational campus of Guangzhou. Li Yinglin undertook the task of resuming classes and completed the arduous reconstruction work.
In August 1948, Chen Xujing took over the post of president, and immediately promoted the academic status of Lingnan University to a new level. Chen Xujing is a famous advocator of the theory of total westernization and enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad. He intended to make Lingnan University the best university in China. Therefore, before taking office, he began to recruit more than ten star level professors from Tsinghua University, Academia Sinica, Peking Union Medical College and other first-class academic institutions. In addition, with his personal friendship and charm, Chen Xujing invited Chen Yinke, Wang Li, Liang Fangzhong and Rong Geng, who are national treasure professors of humanities, to join in, which established Lingnan University's pivotal position in the field of Chinese literature and history. Together with Chen Xujing himself, the excellent teachers of Lingnan University created a situation of gathering talents and elites in Guangdong after the World War II.
At the end of 1952, the national colleges and universities were adjusted. The recreational campus of Lingnan University became the campus of Sun Yat sen University. The original courses or departments were merged into other colleges and universities in Guangzhou. Lingnan University, once a famous university in China, was officially disintegrated, ending more than 60 years of tortuous and glorious educational road. In 1988, on the occasion of the centennial celebration of Lingnan University, the State Education Commission approved the establishment of Lingnan College of Sun Yat sen University, with Wang Pingshan, an alumnus of Lingnan University and former vice governor of Guangdong Province, as the first president.
Resumption of schools in Hong Kong
Since the adjustment of the University in 1952, the alumni of Lingnan University have been striving for the common goal of resuming the University.
In 1966, the Council of Lingnan middle school invited the Hong Kong Association of Lingnan University and the Lingnan club to form the "Lingnan education expansion Association", which made specific preparations for the resumption of Lingnan University.
In September 1967, Lingnan alumni set up Lingnan College Co., Ltd. in Hong Kong to organize Lingnan College, which started the first step of the restoration of Lingnan University. In order to gather resources to promote the development of Lingnan education in Hong Kong, Lingnan College Co., Ltd. merged with Lingnan middle school Co., Ltd. in 1969 to form Lingnan education institution Co., Ltd.
At the beginning of its establishment, Lingnan academy borrowed lessons from Lingnan middle school. In the first year, about 100 freshmen were enrolled in the university preparatory class, and 30 freshmen were enrolled in the first grade. Some of them were boarding in the school. Later, with the support of enthusiastic alumni, Lingnan College built teaching and administrative building, auditorium, language laboratory, library and staff dormitory, which has the basic scale of a post-secondary college. In 1974, the efforts of the teachers and students of Lingnan College were rewarded, and more than 70 North American universities recognized Lingnan College as an institution of higher learning. In 1978, Lingnan College was successfully registered as a post-secondary college with the education department, and then changed its name to Lingnan College. At the same time, the post-secondary school system funded by the government was implemented.
Lingnan alumni established a large-scale post-secondary college in ten years, which laid a solid foundation for the future development. After Lingnan entered the second decade, school affairs expanded rapidly. In 1983, President Chen zuoshun took over Lingnan and shouldered the important task of promoting Lingnan's academic status. During his term of office, President Chen has recruited a large number of talents, reorganized the academic department, reformed the curriculum structure, carried out general education, and prepared for academic accreditation.
In December 1987, the national academic awards committee of the United Kingdom conducted a comprehensive evaluation of Lingnan, and highly appraised its leadership structure, teaching quality, administrative efficiency, and the quality of teachers and students. As for Lingnan's rapid progress over the years, the jury spoke highly of its academic level, which is comparable to that of the institutions under the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee.
Since Lingnan's academic level was affirmed, it decided to stop running two-year courses and asked the government to increase funding to promote the development of honorary diploma courses
