Heritage Description:
Grand Canyon National Park is located on the Colorado Plateau in northwestern Arizona, covering an area of 1904 square miles. It was founded in 1919. The canyon is also known as the Grand Canyon because of the strong undercutting of the Colorado River. It is generally east-west, with a total length of 350 kilometers and an average Valley depth of 1600 meters. The Colorado River flows through the bottom of the valley.
In 1979, according to the natural heritage selection criteria (VII) (VIII) (IX) (x), the Grand Canyon National Park was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List (No. 75) as one of the world heritage sites in the United States. Description: the famous Grand Canyon of Colorado is about 1500 meters deep and eroded by the Colorado River for many years. It is one of the most spectacular canyons in the world. The Grand Canyon is located in Arizona, across the entire Grand Canyon National Park. The horizontal structure of the Grand Canyon shows the geological changes of the earth in the past two billion years, and it also retains a large number of relics of human adaptation to the harsh environment at that time.
Human beings have lived in the Grand Canyon for more than 4000 years. About 2500 BC, the residents left small relics woven by branches in the red wall limestone cave. These relics are considered to be some kind of hunting magic. Other relics let us know their life forms. The best evidence that prehistoric people lived here can be traced back to more than 1000 years ago. The anashaz people lived in houses built of stone and mud. They built pottery and used stone tools to treat fertile soil. Archaeological sites about 2500 years ago were found in the canyon, representing that people have lived here for the past 4000 years. There are signs to remind tourists that federal laws prohibit the movement of artifacts or the destruction of these archaeological sites. All artifacts must be left in their original places. Tourists must make a detour. They must not pass through walls or mounds or lean against them. The ruins of anashaz are scattered all over the canyon, which can be seen by boat passengers, tourists walking along the canyon path or at the edge of the canyon.
As early as 5000 years ago, desert nomads left behind animal statues made of willow branches in the canyon. It is generally believed that these statues may be related to hunting rituals. About 2000 years ago, the anashaz people appeared here. They have the social form of a farm and live in a permanent community of stone houses. There are also the Pueblo people, who built the famous cliff dwelling of Vader Fang mountain. They have no particularly grand buildings in the canyon, but their remains can be seen in every hidden corner or crack.
People lived in the canyon centuries ago, but the first to explore was 13 members of the Colorado expedition, who arrived around 1540. One of the team members wrote to complain that his expedition had encountered insurmountable obstacles and could not continue to go deep into the Grand Canyon. In the 1850s, the U.S. military sent an exploration team into the area. In 1869, American artillery major John Wesley Powell became the first modern explorer in the history of the Grand Canyon. Powell led an expedition to explore the Colorado River and canyon by boat, from the upper Colorado River to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. He wrote travel notes about the scenery of the canyon and the adventure he had witnessed, which was widely publicized and attracted the attention of the whole country. Powell's heroic deeds were widely spread, and people began to take an interest in the southwest of the United States. In the 1880s, John Hans, an explorer famous for his wit and legend, began to organize sightseeing groups to visit the Grand Canyon. The Colorado National Reserve was established in 1911. In 1919, the U.S. Congress passed a bill to designate the deepest and most spectacular section of the Grand Canyon, about 170 kilometers long, as the Grand Canyon National Park. Now the park has been listed as one of the world natural heritage sites by UNESCO.
With its rich geological wonders and gorgeous natural scenery, the Grand Canyon has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world.
Selection criteria (VII)
The Grand Canyon is famous for its unique natural beauty and is considered to be one of the most visual impact landscapes in the world. The Grand Canyon is famous for its deep depth and vast, diverse and labyrinth like terrain. The park's scenic wonders include plateaus, plains, deserts, forests, volcanic cones, lava flows, streams, waterfalls and a large river in the United States.
Selection criteria (VIII)
Within the boundaries of the park, the geological record spans all four eras of earth's evolutionary history, from Precambrian to Cenozoic. The Precambrian and Paleozoic parts of these records are particularly exposed to the canyon wall, including abundant fossil assemblages. A large number of caves contain fossils and animal remains, extending the paleontological record to the Pleistocene.
Selection criteria (IX)
The Grand Canyon is a special example of the evolution of biological environment at different altitudes. With the deepening of rivers, it depicts five of the seven living areas in North America. Plant and animal species overlap in many areas and can be found throughout the canyon.
Selection criteria (x)
The park's diverse topography creates an equally diverse ecosystem. The five living areas in the canyon are presented in a very small geographical area. Grand Canyon National Park is an ecological reserve with relatively intact ecosystems (such as northern forest and desert riparian communities), as well as many endemic, rare or endangered species of animals and plants.

Grand Canyon National Park
Grand Canyon National Park is located on the Colorado Plateau in northwestern Arizona, the western United States. With a total length of 443 kilometers, it is one of the wonders of the world. The canyon is also known as the Grand Canyon because of the strong undercutting of the Colorado River. In 1869, U.S. artillery major Powell led an expedition, sailing from the upper Colorado River to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. He wrote travel notes about the scenery of the canyon and the adventure he had witnessed, which was widely publicized and attracted the attention of the whole country.
The Grand Canyon is generally east-west, starting from the confluence of the Colorado River in the east to the Grande vash cliff near the border of Nevada in the West. The shape is very irregular, winding and circuitous. The top width of the canyon is between 6 and 30 kilometers, and it shrinks downward into a V shape. Both sides of the river are high in the north and low in the south. The maximum depth of the valley is more than 1500 meters. The width of the water surface at the bottom of the valley is less than 1000 meters. The narrowest part is only 120 meters. Due to the scouring of the river and the differences in the structure, hardness and softness of the river valley strata, the long Canyon is mixed with various forms. Some places are wide and some are narrow; some places are as sharp as pagodas; some places are as piled as foundation stones; some places are as towering as peaks; some places are as natural as caves. According to the characteristics of the image, they are given mythological names, such as the temple of Diana, the temple of borromen, the temple of Apollo and so on. In particular, the cross-section of the valley wall strata has clear joints and layers, just like a curved pattern composed of ten thousand volumes of poems and books, which rise and fall along the edge of the mountain and extend along the valley. From the bottom of the valley to the top of the cliff, the rock series of each period from Precambrian to Cenozoic are exposed. The horizontal level is clear and contains representative biological fossils, which is called "living geological history textbook".
