South Loop
Nanhui railway, also known as Nanhui railway, is located in Taitung County and Pingtung County of Taiwan, China. It is a traditional railway trunk line operated by Taiwan Railway Administration. It starts from Fangliao in the West and ends in Taitung in the East. The route is mostly mountainous and sparsely populated.
summary
During the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, there was a plan to build a cross section railway between Pingtung and Taitung, but it was not put into practice because of difficulties in construction. In 1947, 1958, 1963, 1968 and 1976 after the war, the survey and paper route selection were carried out. There were ten plans for the starting and ending locations. Finally, Fangshan line, which was easy to construct, short in construction period and less in funds, was chosen as the route of the South Loop. In 1977, it was listed in the 12th National Congress of construction and planned.
In 1980, the "Nanhui Railway Engineering Office" was set up and started construction with manual work. In 1984, it was incorporated into the "14 important construction plans" with "continue to complete the Nanhui railway plan". The section from Beinan (Taitung) to Zhiben was opened to traffic in July 1985, the section from Zhiben to Taimali was opened to traffic in December 1987, and the whole line was completed and opened to traffic in December 1991. The southern Hui railway project is more difficult than the northern Hui railway. It passes through Fangliao station in the west, Guzhuang, Dawu, Longxi, Jinlun, Taimali, Zhiben and other places. On the way, it passes through chaliufan mountain and Bayan mountain, and the terminal station is Taidong (Beinan) station. A total of 158 large and small bridges and 35 tunnels have been built along the whole line, with a total length of 38202 meters. The longest central tunnel is 8070 meters long, ranking the longest railway tunnel in Taiwan for more than 10 years. It was not until 2003 when the new Guanyin tunnel (10307 meters long) on the northern loop line was opened that it became the second longest.
