Historical evolution

The town is named after the government's residence, and "Heku" means "Tiankeng" and "Didong" in Miao language. It is said that there is a long dragon with five claws covered with golden scales. It has a red baby in its mouth. It often makes waves and damages the crops nearby. The Miao people are complaining. In order to subdue the dragon and prevent it from taking away the treasure, the Miao people built a stone tower on the mountain. As a result, the Dragon disappeared underground, the flood subsided, and a hole appeared. Hoku got its name from the cave.

Before liberation, it belonged to Mingdao Township in 1951, the Fifth District in 1952, and Heku Township in 1956. In 1958, it belonged to Fuxiong commune (later changed to Tuopai commune). In 1961, another commune was set up from Tuopai commune, named after Heku. In 1983, the township was restored, and in November 1993, the township was removed to build a town.
