Shandong fahua temple, also known as Chishan fahua temple, is located at the southern foot of Chishan mountain in the north of Shidao Town, Rongcheng City, Weihai City, Shandong Province. It was built in the Tang Dynasty and is a Buddhist temple with friendship among the people of China, Japan and South Korea.
Brief introduction to the temple
According to historical records, Chishan fahuayuan was built by Zhang baogao, a native of Silla in the Tang Dynasty. In the second year of emperor Xianzong of Tang Dynasty (807), Zhang baogao was recruited into the Tang Dynasty. Because of his excellent martial arts and brave fighting, he was promoted to a junior general in the army of Wuning (now Xuzhou), and was deeply loved by the officers and men of the Tang Dynasty. At that time, there were many Xinluo people living in some villages in Shidao Bay, almost all of them believed in Buddhism. In order to let the people in his hometown have spiritual support and to do good deeds, Zhang baogao obtained the consent of the Tang government in the third year of emperor Mu Zong of the Tang Dynasty (823) and established a Buddhist temple in chishanpu (now Shidaowan). Therefore, the rocks around the mountain are all red. It is said that the God of Chishan blessed the local people. Because the first monks invited to chant the Sutra were from the Tiantai Sect and read the Dharma Sutra, the temple was named "Chishan Dharma Temple". In 828, Zhang baogao returned to Xinluo and asked King Xingde to set up Qinghai town on Guandao, his hometown, as an ambassador. King Xingde assigned him 10000 troops to guard the coast and began to wipe out pirates. After calming down the pirates, Zhang baogao took Qinghai town as his base camp, opened up a sea passage between Silla, China and Japan, established a sea trade network, and became the "maritime Silk Road" at that time.
In June of 839, the fourth year of Kaicheng of Tang Dynasty, master Yuanren, a Japanese monk, entered the Tang Dynasty to seek Dharma. During the crisis, he lived in the fahua Academy of Chishan three times for two years and nine months. With the care and support of local officials and monks, he was able to learn a lot about the politics, culture, economy, religion and other aspects of the Tang Dynasty at that time. After returning to China, master Yuanren never forgot the great harvest of his visit to China. He compiled a book named "a pilgrimage to the Tang Dynasty for Dharma". In the book, he made a detailed description of Chishan fahua Academy (known as one of the three great travels in the East), which made Chishan fahua academy famous at home and abroad. At the same time, in order to thank the people of Chishan for their kindness, master Yuanren asked his disciples to build the "Chishan Buddhist temple" in the name of Chishan in onoyama, Kyoto, Japan.
Chishan fahua temple was famous in the Tang Dynasty. In its heyday, more than 30 monks lived here. Food and clothing were supplied by Zhang baogao. The temple was full of incense. More than 200 people came here to listen to Buddhist scriptures, which was a heyday. During the reign of emperor Wuzong of Tang Dynasty, the wind of exterminating Buddhism and promoting Taoism rose, resulting in the destruction of fahua court. The fahuayuan we saw was rebuilt on the site of fahuayuan in 1988 and officially opened to the public on May 1, 1990. The reconstructed fahua courtyard is a Tang style building, which is basically consistent with the description in master Yuan Ren's "a pilgrimage to the Tang Dynasty for Dharma." there are rock ridges in the north and south, flowing courtyards from west to East, peaks in the southwest and north as walls, and the sea in the East.
In 1987, famous Japanese scholars came to Chishan for investigation. With the assistance of the Foreign Affairs Office of Rongcheng county government, they confirmed the site of fahua academy and set up a stone tablet named "site of fahua Academy in Chishan". On the back of the stone tablet, they recorded the process of master Yuanren's pilgrimage to Tang Dynasty in Chinese and Japanese characters. In order to commemorate the tortuous history of the fahua academy, famous people in Japanese academic circles have contributed to engrave steles to commemorate it.
Daxiong hall is the main building of fahuayuan. It is located in the south of the mountain. Sakyamuni is worshipped in the hall. Because of his great wisdom and courage, he is invincible to evil, so people call him "Daxiong". The four characters of "Da Xiong Bao Dian" were inscribed by Mr. Zhao Puchu, former president of the all China Buddhist Association. Standing on both sides of the Buddha are his two disciples, Da JIAYE and Ananda. The East, West and North walls of the hall are painted with Manjusri Bodhisattva, Puxian Bodhisattva and eighteen Arhats. The murals are vivid and exquisite.
Guanyin hall is the East Chamber hall, mainly dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva. On the left and right sides are Dragon Girl and shancai boy. On the north wall of the hall, there is a huge portrait of Zhang baogao in the costume of a young general in Wuning by a famous Korean painter. Zhang baogao has a high national prestige in the eyes of the Korean people and is known as a national hero and maritime trader. Every year, a large number of Korean guests come here to worship him. Zhang baogao was also respected by the local people for his contribution to the founding of the fahua Academy. Hanging on the south wall of the hall is the monument of "master cijue's Shandong road map", which has high historical value.
Due to the special historical background of the fahuayuan, a large number of Korean and Japanese tourists come here every year to worship.
Architectural features
The reconstructed main rest project of Chishan fahua courtyard covers an area of 5000 square meters, and its layout is basically consistent with that recorded in master Yuanren's book "pilgrimage to the Tang Dynasty for Dharma". In the middle of the mountain gate, there are five big characters of "Chishan fahua courtyard", a pair of male lions perched on both sides of the mountain gate. Entering the gate is a small bridge. The gurgling water flows from west to East under the bridge, facing the majestic Mahavira hall. Sitting in the south of the mountain, it leads to both sides of the granite road of Mahavira Ding hall. In the East is the Korean national flower "infinite flower"; in the West is the Japanese national flower "Cherry Blossom". Among the cherry blossoms, there is a stone tablet at the fahuayuan site in Chishan, which is 1 meter high, 6 meters long and 3 meters wide. The inscriptions in Chinese and Japanese describe master Yuanren's pilgrimage to the Tang Dynasty. The powerful four characters of "Da Xiong Bao Dian" are hanging over the front of the main hall. It is written by Zhao Puchu, President of China Buddhist Association. In the center of the main hall is a giant Buddha statue of Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism. On both sides are his first disciple, Da JIAYE, and his second disciple, Anan namzun. On the back wall are the statues of Manjusri Bodhisattva and Puxian Bodhisattva. On the left and right walls are the eighteen Arhats, giving people a sense of solemnity and magnificence. About 6 meters to the east of the main hall, there is a stone tablet named "Incheon alliance of ocean Youth League of Incheon municipality directly under the central government", which records Zhang baogao's achievements. The east wing of the courtyard is Guanyin hall. Guanyin Bodhisattva sits on the central altar of the temple, holding the nectar bottle in his right hand and a bunch of Yang staff in his left hand. He seems to want to sprinkle endless nectar on those devout and kind-hearted believers to give them grace. On the left and right sides are the Dragon Girl and the mending list. On the north wall is a huge painting of Zhang baogao. On the south wall is a portrait of Japanese monk Yuan Ren and the route map of his pilgrimage to the Tang Dynasty. The west chamber in the courtyard is the hall of Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattvas of dizang are sitting upright and their good eyes are drooping; the Bodhisattvas of Dharma protector Weituo and Kalan are holding knives and grabbing, and they are separated from each other, glaring with dignity, vowing to kill all demons and protect the peace of the world.
