More than 50 years ago, Zhanggutai was a vast sea of sandstorm, known as the "desert beyond the Great Wall". Every year, about 40% - 70% of the farmland is subjected to the pressure of wind blown sand, the grain yield per mu is less than 100 Jin or even no harvest, and 50% of the pastures are damaged by wind blown sand. The rampant sand dunes not only bring a devastating disaster to the local ecology, but also expand to the southeast at an amazing speed every year under the action of the monsoon, directly threatening the ecological environment and homeland security of Northwest Liaoning and even Shenyang.

On April 22, 1952, a group of young scientific and technological workers from all sides of the motherland, responding to the call of the party and the government, left the big city with superior conditions and came to the sparsely populated Zhanggutai. They established the Forestry Experimental Station of western Liaoning Province (changed into Liaoning sand fixation research Institute on December 27, 1978), which sounded the bugle of marching towards the desert. After long-term efforts and repeated experiments, they finally selected five sand fixing plants from hundreds of plants, which are easy to reproduce, have strong regeneration ability, and are resistant to wind erosion and sand burial, such as Salix psammophila, Artemisia chabaga, Lespedeza, Caragana microphylla and Amorpha fruticosa. In 1955, the first windbreak and sand fixation forest of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica was successfully built, which set a precedent for afforestation of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica in China. In addition, they also timely carried out the research on the construction technology and forest protection technology of mixed forest, farmland / pasture shelterbelt and sand orchard, and the research on the structure and function of sand fixation forest ecosystem is second to none in China. In 1957, they summed up a set of comprehensive sand fixation methods, which were "mainly based on Shrub sand fixation, supplemented by artificial sand barrier, advancing along the wind, blocking the front and pulling back, and controlling in batches". They were known as one of the three major sand control methods in China, and filled the gap in the history of shrub sand fixation in China. Among them, legume shrub sand fixation was the first in the world.

After 50 years of hard work and unremitting efforts of several generations, the forest coverage rate of Zhanggutai has increased from 6% in the early days of liberation to 67% today, which provides guarantee for stable and high yield of agriculture and improvement of farmers' life. Fruit trees, rice, tobacco, peanuts and other crops have settled down here, and the grain yield has increased from less than 100 Jin per mu to 400 kg today. Zhanggutai has evolved from the original barren land into a land of lush forest, clear water and prosperous agriculture and animal husbandry. It has become a national characteristic seedling base.
