Lake Biwa

Located in Shiga County, Japan, Lake Biwa is a fresh water lake in the mountains of central and western Japan, covering an area of 674km2. It is a symbol, National Park and the largest lake in Japan. It is designated by the special treatment law for water quality preservation of lakes and marshes in Japan, and is listed in the list of international important wetlands of the Convention on wetlands.

Pipa Lake is close to Kyoto, Nara, Osaka and Nagoya, providing water for 14 million people in Kinki area, so it is called "lake of life".

It is one of the fastest growing areas in Japan in recent years, and also one of the three major candidates for Japan to move its capital. Biwa Lake covers an area of 670.33km2, with a lakeshore length of 241km, the deepest of 103.58m and an average water depth of 41.2m. The rivers flowing out of Lake Biwa are named setagawa, yuzhichuan, Dianchuan according to the sequence of upstream and downstream, and finally flow into Osaka Bay. In addition, in order to supply water, irrigation, power generation and other purposes, the artificial drainage channel of Pipa Lake was opened up.

Pipa Lake Bridge is built at the narrowest part of the lake. The north part is called North Lake, and the south part is called South Lake. History of lakes

Pipa Lake was formed about 4 million years ago (or 6 million years ago), because the crustal movement formed in Shangye, Sanchong county. After that, it gradually moved northward to its present position. Among the lakes in the world, Lake Tanganyika is the third oldest lake after Lake Baikal and Lake Tanganyika.

In 1890, Pipa Lake, which supplied water to Beijing, was opened.

On July 24, 1950, Pipa Lake National Park was established.

In September 1964, Pipa Lake Bridge was opened.

In 1980, the Pipa Lake Ordinance was enacted.

In 1993, it was listed in the list of international important wetlands of the Convention on wetlands.

In 2003, the regulations on the use of Lake Biwa for sightseeing came into effect.

The ecosystem of Lake Biwa is quite rich, with more than 1000 species of animals and plants growing in it. There are about 46 species of fish, 40 species of shellfish and 70 species of aquatic plants, so it is called the treasure house of Japanese freshwater fish.
