History of the ancient city
The ancient city is located in the middle of Dongchang Lake in Liaocheng City, a city wall in the Northern Song Dynasty. The city is square with a total area of about 1 million square meters. The city wall was first built in 1070, the third year of Xining of Song Dynasty. In 1372, Chen Yong, the commander of pingshanwei in Dongchang, built a brick city. The perimeter of the city wall is 3.5 kilometers, the height is 11.7 meters, the top width is 6.7 meters, and the base thickness is 11.7 meters. The interior wall is rammed with concrete and the exterior wall is built with masonry. The city has four gates, a gate tower and an urn. The south, East and West Wengcheng is the turn head gate. The South Gate looks like a phoenix head in the East, the East and West gates look like a phoenix wing in the south, and the north gate looks like a phoenix tail in the north, so it is called "Phoenix City". The gate towers of the four cities all have double eaves, and the four corners fly up. They are called "Chunxi" in the East, "Qingyuan" in the west, "Zhengde" in the south, and "Xuanwu" in the north. In the seventh year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1579), more than 2700 crenels and 27 enemy towers were built on the city wall; four gatehouses were renamed as Yinbin in the East, Nari in the west, Nanxun in the South and Suoyue in the north. Each gate has water gate and suspension bridge. There are two floors of Wangyue and Lvyun in the northeast and northwest of the city. The city is tall and strong, easy to defend and difficult to attack. It has the potential of being strategically located and dominating its neighbors. It also has the saying that "Phoenix can be trapped without losing".

Myths and legends
According to legend, Liaocheng is originally a Wutong forest, with a pair of Phoenix, commanding hundreds of birds in the forest, and lead a happy life. One year, a dragon from the East China Sea came here and drove away the Phoenix, turning this area into a vast ocean. People call it Dongzhou lake. Seeing the rippling of the lake, the local officials wanted to build a city by the lake, but the craftsmen felt that the project was difficult and they did not dare to undertake it. At this time, two people came, one was Wang Dong, the other was Wang Chang. They volunteered and were willing to undertake the construction. It turned out that these two were the sons of the Phoenix who were driven away by the dragon. Wang Dong and Wang Chang built the city, and Phoenix led a hundred birds to send wood and stone materials. Soon, a magnificent Lake City was built. In order to commemorate the achievements of Phoenix in the construction of the city, people named the city phoenix. Later, the dragon in the East China Sea made waves in an attempt to destroy the new town. Wang Dong and Wang Changli fought against the dragon. The Dragon fled to the East China Sea and dug out a waterway to irrigate the city. In order to save the people in Phoenix City, Wang Dong and Wang Chang got into the water and blocked the waterway with their bodies. In order to thank the two brothers for their noble morality of dedicating themselves to protecting the city and rescuing the public, people changed the name of Phoenix City to Dongchang City, which is what we now call the ancient city of China on water.
