In 1958, the "Tang family landlord manor Museum" was established here, which is subordinate to Xunyi County Bureau of culture and education. In March 1971, it was rebuilt as Xunyi class education exhibition hall. In 1988, it was changed to "Tangjia folk custom museum of Xunyi county". The museum is located in tangjiamin house, which was announced as a provincial cultural relics protection unit by Shaanxi Provincial People's Government in 1992.
The landlords of the Tang family were the well-known "Sanshui Tang family" in the middle and late Qing Dynasty. The fourth generation of Tang Jingzhong was in the heyday of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, and the Tang family also reached a period of prosperity. It is based on agriculture and prospers its family by business. Its business names are all over the 13 provinces in China. It claims to "remit money to the 13 provinces in China, including the title of magistrate Daotai; horses don't eat other people's grass when they go to other provinces, and people don't stop other people's shops when they go to Sichuan.". The scale of this can be seen. In 1795, Tang Jingzhong also went to Beijing to attend the Qianlong banquet held by Emperor Qianlong. He presented seven grade official clothes, silver medals, walking sticks, and seven character temperament.
Since then, the Tang family had an official title. They were connected with the emperor and officials. They were exploited for business profits. In addition, they had a good management. Therefore, their business was prosperous and their financial resources were strong. At that time, the Tang family owned a large area of land and a large number of tenant farmers and livestock in Xunyi, Binxian, Chunhua and Yaoxian counties, and collected a huge amount of land rent every year. At that time, it was not only rich and powerful in Shaanxi, but also ranked the first in the country. In the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty, there were only 60 people in the Tang family, including 165 servants and maids, and 66 Yingge sedans (equivalent to high-class sedans). It was really "you can't go out without a sedan chair, and the deacons of the whole Tang family opened the way.".
Because of the wealth and power of the Tang family, the houses they built were extremely exquisite and the workmanship was very meticulous. It took 43 years to build 87 palace style courtyards, about 700 rooms in each of them. All the buildings are made of wood, stone and brick. Not only the foundation is firm and solid, but also each house is made of polished bricks and stone with meticulous carving and depiction of dragons and phoenixes. The joints of the bricks are also watered with lime and glutinous rice juice. There are various patterns such as "Eight Immortals" and "twenty four filial piety" carved on the board partition wall of the courtyard, and "eight horses" and "Huashan chess" carved on the corner columns and walls of the courtyard. There are also relief works such as peony, plum bamboo and dry lotus. After the completion of the compound, the Tang family built a large theater to celebrate, singing for more than three months.
From the end of the Qing Dynasty, this big landlord family, which had a lot of wealth, gradually fell down in the extreme extravagance. All kinds of belongings and treasures bought by the family have been almost lost after many vicissitudes. The Tang family's compound has been turned into a folk museum, while most of the Tang family's descendants live in Tangjia village and live by hard work.
