Cuijiao ancient residence is the largest single building area and the best preserved ancient residence found in Jiangnan area so far, which can be called the masterpiece of Jiangnan ancient residence. The ancient dwellings in Cuijiao were included in the large-scale picture album of "old houses" in China and displayed in the World Book Fair in 1998, which attracted the attention of experts in the field of architecture at home and abroad.

Located in Cuijiao village, Bailin Town, 20 kilometers away from Fuding City, Fujian Province, it's about two hours' drive from Taimu mountain.

architectural style

The ancient folk house is the private house of Wu family. Founded in 1745, it has a history of more than 250 years. It is still in good condition. The main building of the courtyard is large-scale, covering an area of 5000 square meters: it is supported by 360 wooden columns, surrounded by 24 patios, 6 halls and 12 small halls, with a total of 192 rooms, covering an area of 13980 square meters (20 mu). As far as the single building is concerned, it can be said that it is the largest ancient folk house in Jiangnan. On the overall plan, the pattern is ingenious, and the vein is clear, crisscross and connected horizontally and vertically. It is like an old go board, which is set in the valley, welcoming the immortal to play on the ground at any time.

The ancient house is the result of the organic combination of the closed courtyard in the north and the open courtyard in the south. For example: the double-layer sliding window with the combination of virtual and real -- the closed real window inside and the empty leaky window outside -- the combination of rigidity and softness: another example is that the strict courtyard is connected with the patio, and the flower walls on both sides of the patio borrow the scenery with flower windows. The flowers and plants on the outside of the wall are both invisible and implicit, which is a typical way of landscape architecture in the south of the Yangtze River. The combination of northern and southern cultures is dignified but light, dignified but mischievous, such as a young girl in love, eager to try and reserved.

The whole building not only occupies the grand and domineering of the royal palace building, but also integrates the exquisite carving of Jiangnan folk houses. All the beams, columns, windows and doors are decorated with woodcarving patterns, or figures, or flowers, or auspicious birds, or auspicious animals, lifelike.

Development history

The ancient residence in Cuijiao was built by the 104th generation grandson of Fu Chai, one of the five tyrants of the spring and Autumn period. After 13 years, it cost 20000 taels of silver. It took more than 1000 people to erect 360 wooden pillars at the same time. Liu Yong, a bachelor in the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, had a close relationship with the Wu family. He once presented a couplet of "forget to charm when you learn a lesson, and see the sheep after you leave a poem". He hoped that his friends would succeed in reading and their friendship would last forever. The ancient dwellings also retain precious cultural relics such as the bamboo slips inscribed by Su Shi, a great poet of the Song Dynasty, and the palace lanterns of the Qing Dynasty, as well as traditional activities such as cockfighting and puppet show, inheriting the story of an ancient family
