Erkeshan
Erkeshan is located 2 kilometers north of Kedong County, Heilongjiang Province. It is a volcanic hill. It is composed of two opposing peaks, hence the name.
Overview of erkeshan
The mountain is composed of basalt, with an altitude of 430.7 meters and a southeast northwest trend, covering an area of 1.2 square kilometers. The surface layer is deposited aeolian sand, and the lower layer is volcanic ash. The south slope is artificial pine forest, and the north slope is natural forest. There were many temples on the mountain. The ancient town village of Jincheng Town, 5 kilometers northwest of Erke mountain, is the ancient city site of "Puyu road" in Jin Dynasty. Erkeshan is located in Kedong County, Qiqihar City, on the South Bank of Wuyuer River, a tributary of Nenjiang River. According to the third volume of Heilongjiang annals, the origin of Erke mountain is as follows: "the mountain in Kedong County is known as karkatu mountain. One is kerketu, and the other is Erke mountain.". It is also named because Keshan and Kedong counties are adjacent to each other.
The archaeological discovery of erkeshan
Erkeshan is a extinct volcano. In recent years, archaeologists have discovered a one-year Neolithic site on the saddle shaped valley of Mount erkeshan and collected many stone tools. An almost complete pottery shell was found in the cliff stratum beside the crater hall. According to the research, this pottery shell is a bronze ware at least three to four thousand years ago. Therefore, it is inferred that erkeshan might have erupted in the late Quaternary period 10000 years ago.
Natural scenery of Erke mountain
Looking from afar, Erke mountain has two peaks, green pines and cypresses. Every rainy season, the two peaks appear and disappear in the clouds, just like a fairyland. The big and small mountains depend on each other. One kilometer to the northwest of the mountain, there is a small hill lying alone with two peaks and one hill, just like parents carrying children and full of interest. Erke mountain has been a famous tourist attraction since ancient times. In 1919, Zou Minghe, a Taoist priest, visited the mountain. He thought the mountain was an auspicious place. He personally asked for donations, solicited benefactors, and built Buddhist temples and shrines at the north entrance of Nanshan Mountain, built a plaque tower and a Bell Pavilion, chiseled two caves of Changxian and Huxian, and built Confucius, Guan and yuesansheng temples and Niangniang temples at the south foot of Beishan Mountain; At the top of Nanshan Mountain, a pavilion and a temple are built. At every temple fair, faithful men and women from far and near come to the temple to help the old and the young, hold candles, burn incense, worship, do good deeds and sing stage plays. It's very lively. In the winter of 1947, during the land reform struggle, some people, out of hatred for the feudal rule, destroyed the Buddhist temple. Now there are only the stele of "unique cave", the pagoda of futu where Zou Ming and Taoist were placed, and the stele of nine holes through the dragon carved with "beautiful mountains and rivers, handed down from ancient times". In recent years, under the protection of religious policy, juehai, a monk in Wutai Mountain, has built a 12 room Buddhist temple in Nanshan urn -- Lengyan temple. The two-story "Jushi building" is under construction. Many monks and nuns are gathered in the temple to chant sutras and meditate. The temple shows the piety of good men and women, and the prosperous scene of the past appears again. In order to make it convenient for tourists to go up the mountain, 538 steps were built on the south slope of the mountain, leading to the top of the mountain. A pavilion was built at the top of the mountain for tourists to rest and sightseeing. Standing on the top of the mountain, Kedong has a panoramic view of the landscape, with the crisscross fields. Looking back to the north, you can see the water of Wudalianchi looming like a fairyland in Penglai.
