Nine Mirror Tower
Jiujing pagoda is an ancient pagoda on Yangshan mountain in Gupi Town, Suining City, Jiangsu Province. It is named Jiujing pagoda because there are nine golden plates (bronze mirrors) on the pagoda, with eight sides facing all directions and one side facing the sky on the top. Built in the Eastern Han Dynasty, it is the earliest Buddhist pagoda recorded in history. It has been destroyed by war.
Located in Suining County, Xuzhou, Jiujing pagoda is the earliest pagoda recorded in China. Therefore, futu temple was renamed Jiujing temple. In 494 ad, the Tuoba family of the Northern Wei Dynasty came to power in the Central Plains, and xiapi was changed to East Xuzhou. The foreign rulers accepted the Han culture, promoted Buddhism and Confucianism, and instructed the local governments to build the temple futu, and Jiujing temple was also included in the expansion. In Zhenguan period of Tang Dynasty, Jiujing temple was renamed Sakyamuni, which was the predecessor of Yangshan Zongshan temple. In the Southern Song Dynasty, xiapi was still an important military town. Unfortunately, Jiujing pagoda was destroyed in the war between Song Dynasty and Jin Dynasty. The site is located under the futu Temple of Jiujing Lake in Suining.
According to the records of the later Han Dynasty and Pizhou annals, in 193 ad, when Zuo Rong, a native of Danyang in the Eastern Han Dynasty, was appointed Prime Minister of xiapi, he built the futu temple on the Yangshan mountain, two Li southwest of xiapi city. Futu temple has a golden plate on the top and a heavy building on the bottom, which can accommodate more than 3000 people. There is a pagoda in the futu temple, on which there are nine gold plates (nine bronze mirrors): eight facing all directions, one facing the sky in the middle, so it is called the nine mirror pagoda. The nine mirror pagoda made of brick and stone is octagonal and nine level, with cornices and angles on each floor. There are 480 Buddha sculptures inside and outside the pagoda, decorated with gold brocade. The tower has 148 steps, spiraling up to the top of the tower, which is the earliest Pagoda in China.
