Former residence of Zhao Yuanren
Zhao Yuanren (1892-1982), a native of Changzhou, is an American. He has been a professor of Tsinghua University, American University and President of American language society. He is a famous linguist and musician in the modern world. The former residence now has two flat houses and two floor houses. There are 20 rooms above and below, all of which are made of hard wood.
In June 2006, the provincial people's government announced it as a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.
Zhao Yuanren's former residence is located in the west of lane 16, Qingguo lane, Changzhou City. Zhao Yuanren (1892-1982), a native of Changzhou, is an internationally famous scholar, linguist, musician and philosopher. In 1910, he was admitted to the first Tsinghua University to study mathematics, physics, philosophy and music at Cornell University and Harvard University. He received a bachelor's degree in physics and a doctor's degree in philosophy. He has been a professor of Tsinghua Academy of Chinese Studies and director of the language section of the Institute of history, Academia Sinica. In 1938, he went to the United States to give lectures and became a native of the United States. He served successively as professor of Harvard University, chairman of American language society, academician of Academia Sinica, chairman of American Oriental society, etc. His former residence is his great grandfather, Zhao Langpu (the governor of Huafu in the Qing Dynasty). It was built during the reign of Xianfeng. In 1907, when Yuan Ren was 9 years old, he accompanied his parents to Baoding to escort the coffin back to normal, so he lived here. His father Heng Nian taught ancient books such as Shujing and Zuozhuan in his house, and spent his childhood and childhood here. The former residence now consists of two entrances of flat houses and ten entrances of zhanyitang house. Facing south, it is built of brick and wood for hard mountain. In 1981, when the 89 year old Zhao Yuanren returned home, he had a rest here. His daughter Zhao Xinna accompanied the organ. Zhao Yuanren composed his famous song "teach me how not to miss her". The next year, he died in the United States. In December 1987, Changzhou Municipal People's government announced it as the second batch of municipal cultural relics protection units. In June 2006, the provincial people's government announced it as a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.
