Taihu Lake is the birthplace of Chinese Buddhist Zen culture. In the Western Jin Dynasty, fotucheng, an eminent monk from the western regions, came here to build a pagoda. In 561 ad, Huike, the second patriarch of Zen, came from Shaolin Temple to Sikong mountain and Shizishan by Huating lake to preach and promote Buddhism, and evolved the "one flower and five leaves" of Chinese Zen. The big hulushi cave of Shizishan where the second patriarch of Zen took part in meditation is still well preserved.

There are dozens of key temples in the scenic area, such as fotu temple, erzu temple, Xifeng temple and Haihui temple, which are very famous since ancient times. Monk Daxing, the Bodhisattva of Shuangxi temple in Jiuhua Mountain, and Mr. Zhao Puchu, a famous religious leader, former president of the all China Buddhist Association and honored as "living Buddha" at home and abroad, all grew up on the Bank of Huating lake.

Zen source Taihu Lake tourist area covers an area of 257.8 square kilometers, including Huating Lake Scenic Area and 5000 year old cultural and Expo Park, which is integrated by a Zen source cultural Avenue and eco-tourism belt.

On the morning of September 12, Taihu County held a mobilization meeting to create a national all-around tourism demonstration area and a 5A scenic spot of Zen source Taihu Lake tourism area. The meeting pointed out that the overall goal of "innovation and entrepreneurship" work in Taihu county is to build a 5A, 2 4A and 15 3A scenic spots in the whole county, turn the county into a boutique tourism city, and build a new pattern of global tourism. By 2018, the annual tourism reception will reach 5 million person times, the total tourism income will reach 2.3 billion yuan, the added value of tourism industry will account for more than 15% of the local GDP, and the number of tourism practitioners will account for more than 20% of the total local employment. The performance of tourism poverty alleviation is good. Farmers in the region directly benefit 20% from tourism development, and 20% of the registered poor people in the region get rid of poverty through tourism.
