About the park
Weihai Park started construction in February 2000, completed on May 31, 2001, and officially opened on June 1. The park starts from Sifang road in the north and ends at Pingdu road in the south, facing Weihai Bay. With a total length of 3218.6 meters and an average width of 144.3 meters, the park covers a total area of 465000 square meters.
There is a central cultural square in the middle of the park and four main scenic spots from north to south. A large-scale main sculpture, four scenic theme sculptures and several sculpture sketches are set up in the central square and four scenic spots. Guided by the theory of ecological garden, the park greening takes the local tree species as the skeleton to form an ecological community with clear primary and secondary, alternate density, scattered, simple and lively, which fully reflects the richness and diversity of plant species. The park is full of trees and flowers. The sea, woods, green space, flowers, sculptures, rocks and buildings are organically combined to form a beautiful picture of an ecological coastal city. Weihai Park, with its large scale, exquisite design and excellent quality, has become a seaside scenic line integrating transportation, sightseeing, entertainment and leisure, with distinctive seaside features, rich artistic connotation and organic integration of humanity and nature. The landscaping project of Haibin South Road with the park as the main body won the "Luban Award" of China Construction Engineering in 2001.
Historical evolution
During the period of British forced renting Weihaiwei, the British opened up a commercial port area near the wharf, and most government agencies and commercial facilities were built near the wharf. The fort of Dongshan (now Dongshan Hotel) near the wharf is close to the sea and the mountain. With beautiful scenery, it naturally becomes a place for Chinese and foreign tourists and local residents to take a walk and enjoy the sea. At that time, there were shade trees and many flowers and plants.
In 1928, the British took advantage of the opportunity to reorganize the area, laying roads, placing seats, adding varieties of trees and flowers, and built a relatively simple Park, which was officially opened to the public on June 4, 1928.
After the recovery of Weihaiwei, Xu Dongfan, who was then the Commissioner of Weihaiwei management office, carried out large-scale reconstruction and expansion of the park in February 1934. At that time, the park was built with momentum, covering an area of 46000 square meters. At the top of the park, there was an auditorium called wangyunxuan, which could accommodate 300 people. At that time, it was the only auditorium in Weihai. The platform on the house is a good place for sightseeing. There is a colorful Pavilion called Changfeng Pavilion; there is a sports ground with complete sports equipment; there are 6 forest farms, 8 orchards, 16 flower beds and 2 grasslands. The park was completed in July of the same year and the inauguration ceremony was held on July 15. The park will be officially named Weihai park.
Weihai park has a very good location. To the west of it is the King Hotel run by Duncan Clark, an Englishman. The hotel was built in 1900, with more than 80 guest rooms, billiards room, tennis court and other sports and entertainment facilities. It was the most luxurious hotel in Weihai at that time, and most important guests from home and abroad stayed here. As a result, Weihai park adjacent to it has become a must for Chinese and foreign dignitaries. In addition, in the more than three years after the completion of the park, Weihai's tourism industry is also in a prosperous period, with nearly 10000 people from the Royal Navy coming here every summer.
However, disaster will come soon. In March 1938, the Japanese invaders set foot on Weihai and ravaged it wantonly. In August 1945, when the dying Japanese left Weihai, they bombed Weihai park. Wangyunxuan collapsed, the King Hotel became a pile of rubble, and the whole park was full of bullet marks That year, Weihai Park was only 17 years old! Since then, the construction of Weihai Park started in February 2000, completed on May 31, 2001, and officially opened on June 1.
