Development background
The history of Zhejiang nature museum can be traced back to the Zhejiang West Lake Museum founded on the basis of the first West Lake Expo in 1929.
In 1953, it was renamed Zhejiang Museum.
In July 1984, the natural part of Zhejiang museum was established as a separate institution.
In 1991, Zhejiang Natural History Museum built the storehouse business building;
In January 1998, Zhejiang Museum of natural history built its exhibition hall;
On July 28, 2009, the new Zhejiang Natural History Museum opened.
In 2012, Zhejiang nature museum was approved as a national first-class Museum by the State Administration of cultural relics.
On May 18, 2017, it was awarded the most innovative Museum in China.
From August 21, 2018, Zhejiang Natural History Museum was officially renamed Zhejiang Natural History Museum.

Zhejiang Nature Museum has a building area of 26000 square meters, a permanent exhibition hall of 9000 square meters, a temporary exhibition hall of 2500 square meters and a warehouse of 5000 square meters.
The first floor is equipped with consulting service and temporary exhibition hall; the second floor is equipped with earth life story exhibition, adolescent education exhibition, man and nature oil painting exhibition and office area; the third floor is equipped with biological world exhibition and green Zhejiang exhibition.

Collection quality
Among the nearly 5000 exhibits, Zhejiang Nature Museum has a collection of animals, plants, fossils, rocks, minerals, natural arts, etc. There are 20 square meters of crinoid fossils, giant mammoth fossils, exquisite Anshun dragon fossils, more than 10 meters of gray whale bones and whale shark specimens, Zhejiang wild South China tiger specimens, and many type specimens, such as Lixian Jiangshan dinosaur, Linhai Zhejiang pterosaur, etc.
Activity construction
Zhejiang nature museum plans and organizes characteristic science popularization activities by means of holidays and anniversaries. Among them, "ten thousand children draw a hundred birds" and other four teaching plans were included in the book "science education activities of Natural Science Museum" by China Institute of science popularization. Zhejiang Museum of nature has established a marriage relationship with more than 150 primary and secondary schools to realize resource sharing and complementary advantages; it has established a youth science popularization team and cultivated a team of volunteers and juvenile counselors.
Zhejiang Nature Museum has provided specimens, participated in the design and arrangement of exhibitions, trained commentators for dozens of museums such as municipal and county-level museums and nature reserves, and held nearly 100 roving exhibitions inside and outside the province. In 2008, the Tianmushan branch of Zhejiang nature museum was established in cooperation with Tianmushan National Nature Reserve, which effectively extended the exhibition and teaching function of the museum.

Through space, color, modeling and other design elements, using natural restoration, artistic generalization, interactive inspiration and other modern techniques, the complex and diverse animals and plants with regional characteristics and their living environment are displayed. Through the flexible use of sound, light, electricity and other multimedia technologies, the exhibition reproduces the truth of history and the leap of life.

Scientific research achievements
Zhejiang nature museum is one of the units of natural basic research in Zhejiang Province. The academic research covers botany, geopaleontology, entomology, invertebrate science, ichthyology, amphibians and reptiles, ornithology, zoology and Museology.
Up to 2014, Zhejiang Nature Museum has hosted or participated in the compilation of more than 50 monographs, including the fauna of Hemudu Neolithic site in Yuyao, Zhejiang, the collection of museum research papers on inheriting civilization in communication science, Sichuan Jingyan complete sauropod dinosaur emeilong Mao, Hangzhou wild bird, Zhejiang farmland shellfish, etc., and has compiled and published the world movement More than 10 popular science books, such as the atlas of the University of things, Encyclopedia of new century animals, dinosaurs, etc.; published nearly 500 academic papers; presided over and participated in the investigation of natural resources or the overall planning of nature reserves such as Jiulongshan, Dapanshan, Jiushan and Wuzhishan islands in Zhejiang Province; undertook the research on the classification and grading of natural collections ”There are more than 100 national, provincial and ministerial level projects, such as "study on Breeding Ecology and Protection Countermeasures of black billed Crested Tern", "study on pterosaur fossils in Zhejiang", "study on paleoenvironment of cultural sites in Zhejiang".
