Jingyin Temple

Jingyin temple, formerly known as gujianshan temple, is a famous Buddhist holy land in Bashu area. Located in jigongzui (Gujian mountain) of Qijiang, Chongqing, it was built in 960 ad (pre Song Dynasty). It is located on Gujian mountain with an altitude of 1146 meters. It is 9 kilometers away from Qijiang County and an hour's drive away from the main urban area of Chongqing.

Historical evolution

In the Wanli period of Ming Dynasty (1610), when the temple foundation was excavated, one ancient sword and one ancient mirror were excavated, so the mountain was named Gujian mountain. Gujian mountain has such landscapes as Shesheng cliff, stone path to heaven, stone horse, rooster stone, moer cave, chessboard stone, Stalagmite in cloud, Zen cave, etc. It is majestic mountains, Qifeng abrupt, from a solitary peak, towering in the air, like a rooster, so it is also known as the cock mouth. There are three cliffs in jigongzui, and the terrain is very dangerous. There is only one stone path leading to the sky. Throughout the year, the pines and cypresses are luxuriant, the trees are shady, the scenery is brilliant, and the scenery is pleasant.

In 1730, Jingyin temple was in its heyday. There were 18 halls, such as "Mahatma hall", "Sansheng hall", "Guanyin hall", "Manjusri hall", "Puxian hall", "Fushou hall" and "Sutra collection building". They were distributed in the front and back of the mountain. They were full of incense all the year round. There were an endless stream of good men and women worshiping Buddha. They came from thousands of miles away. Therefore, there was "Bodhisattva of jigongzui should be far, not near" It is well known in Bashu.

During the cultural revolution, Jingyin temple was seriously damaged. In 1991, with the approval of Qijiang County Government, Jingyin Temple rebuilt the majestic "Guangming hall", "pharmacist hall", "Guanyin hall", "Jingang hall", "dashanmen" and "comprehensive building". In 1999 and 2007, monk Weixian, vice chairman of the Advisory Committee of the Chinese Buddhist Association and President of the Chongqing Buddhist Association, visited Qijiang twice and led the eminent monks to open the statue of Jingyin temple.

There is also a popular legend in Jingyin Temple: "the Bodhisattva of jigongzui should be far away, not near.". It is said that in the early days, there lived a clay craftsman surnamed Wang on jigongzui mountain in Gujian mountain. One night, the potter Wang dreamed of Goddess Guanyin. After waking up from his dream, Wang mud craftsman discussed with his wife and decided to build a statue of Goddess Guanyin. As a result, Wang's statue was placed on the top of jigongzui mountain. In front of Guanyin, he made the first wish: "I hope my son will grow up and become an official and noble man in the future, not like a clay craftsman all his life." Ten years later, Wang's son was favored by the county magistrate of Nanzhou (today's Qijiang) and recommended to Chuzhou (today's Chongqing city). He really became a high official. Wang's clay maker said that it was the goddess of Guanyin, so there was an endless stream of people who came to worship the Bodhisattva. Wang's son sent his men to build a temple on the top of the mountain, Jingyin temple, which is still there. In the second year after the temple was repaired, Wang's son returned home to visit his relatives and went to jigongzui with Nanzhou county magistrate to worship Guanyin. They made a wish at the same time, hoping to be promoted in the coming year. As expected, Wang's son was promoted the next year. So the magistrate of Nanzhou murmured: should the Bodhisattva be far away or near. Since then, the saying "should the Bodhisattva of jigongzui be far away or not be near" has spread, and many people have traveled thousands of miles to jigongzui to burn incense and make a wish.
