One is the newly excavated lake, and the other has the meaning of new Nankai. The lake has clear water and beautiful scenery. There are benches around the lake for people to rest.

To the north of Xinkai lake is the old library (Science Library) of Nankai University with a long history. It is a place for self-study in the school. It opens late. Therefore, most students who struggle for postgraduate entrance examination or going abroad study late at night (closed at 23:30 or 0:00 according to different seasons). In the garden between the library and the lake, there are several tall Metasequoia glyptostroboides, a national second-class protected plant. Across Dazhong road in the south is the Oriental Art Building of Nankai University. In the west is the second main teaching building of Nankai University. To the East is the earliest lake of Nankai University, horseshoe lake, which is also one of the main lotus scenic spots in Tianjin.

Xinkai lake is located in Nankai University with a long history, rich in culture and beautiful scenery. Every morning, there are many scenes of old people doing morning exercises by the lake. Students often pull out their mobile phones and press the shutter to leave a beautiful scene. As a result, Xinkai lake has become one of the most popular locations in Nankai University.

Xinkai lake once became an open-air concert venue when SARS was rampant. That time has become an unforgettable memory for Nankai graduates.

According to alumni's recollection, after the freshmen started school in 1954, the school excavated a nearly dry reed pond on the west side of the horseshoe lake. Because the west side of the lake was the student dormitory and stadium (the area where the second main building is located today), the size of the lake was greatly restricted, and the shape of the lake was also restricted due to its proximity to Dazhong road. After a month or two of continuous digging, the bottom of the lake was very deep, and the excavated soil was piled not far away to fill the low-lying area of the new stadium (today's Stadium). Just when everyone thought that the project was about to be completed, the workers carried the soil back in the opposite direction - the lake filling began. After more than half a month, the lake digging began again. This tortuous process also reflects the differences between the leaders at that time in digging and filling. Dig and fill, fill and dig again. The construction of the newly opened Lake fully proves that it's endless fun to fight with heaven, earth and people. By the end of the year, the lake was really dug. What's the name? It has been suggested that since it is a newly excavated lake, it should be called Xinkai lake, which also means xinnankai. Everyone agreed, so the name of Xinkai lake has been handed down to today.

The newly opened Lake in history allows skating on it. In many alumni's recollection articles, there are even records of digging holes in the ice to fish - the scene is clearly a reprint of sitting on the bench to fish on the ice of Haihe River every winter. In addition to skating, swimming was also allowed in the history of Xinkai lake. "After the impoundment of Xinkai lake, the lake has no slope and the pool is deep. Every summer, some students often jump into the lake and swim for more than ten times, and keep swimming for more than an hour. Swimming tired, swim backstroke, lying on the water looking up at the sky, that kind of comfortable is not what today's students can enjoy. Swimming is no longer allowed nowadays.

During SARS

In 2003, SARS was rampant in China. In order to avoid infection, the school also banned all the students in the school. In order to help everyone pass the boring time, every weekend, a series of outdoor concerts of "youth flying, love me Nankai" were held on the east side of Xinkai lake. The school choir and band actively participated in the concerts, attracting a lot of teachers and students. That time has become an unforgettable memory of Nankai graduates.

At the end of June, SARS gradually disappeared, but the new lake concert continued, and the lake stage built by it also facilitated the graduation party. On the 26th, the 03rd graduation party was held, that is, from that year, the theme of the graduation party was set as "gather and disperse in the end of the world, depend on Nankai" and continues to this day. The chorus song "beautiful Nankai, my home" also makes the students of Nankai who are going to different places feel the warmth of their alma mater.

Of course, Xinkai lake used to make people sad. At 19:14 on December 3, 2004, Mr. Chen (Chen Shengshen) passed away, and then there were more and more memorial posts on BBS and calls to commemorate Xinkai lake. By 22:00, thousands of students with paper cranes and candles were standing by Xinkai lake. President Hou (Hou Zixin) and vice president Zhang Jing also came to the lake. With a loudspeaker, President Hou introduced Mr. Chen's treatment process to the students in a hoarse voice. At the same time, he advised us not to be too sad, to inherit our will and build Nankai well. Then everyone sang the school song of Nankai, and some students even stayed vigil by Xinkai Lake until dawn. In the next few days, the trees beside Xinkai lake and Dazhong road were covered with thousands of paper cranes. Walking in the school, I couldn't restrain my feelings. During that time, the students witnessed the unity of Nankai and their deep love for Mr. Chen.
