origin
Xu Di is the most famous street in Gaodi street of Beijing road. Its name comes from the Xu family. From the deeds of many celebrities in the Xu family, people can see the vicissitudes of China's political situation for more than 100 years.
Xu Di's "family temple of doctor Xu" reminds people of Xu's family history. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, Xu Yongming, a native of Chenghai, Chaozhou, went to Guangzhou to run a small business. He lived in Gaodi street, married Huang, and gave birth to three children. After Xu Yongming died, his family was in difficulty. His eldest son, Xu baiting, worked as a child laborer in the salt shop at the age of 13. Because of his diligence and loyalty, his boss rewarded him with some shares. After painstaking efforts, he eventually became a major salt merchant in Guangzhou. Xu Xiangguang, the eldest son of Xu baiting, was elected in the 24th year of Jiaqing (1819) and a Jinshi in the 12th year of Daoguang (1832). He successively served as an inspector and an administrative envoy of Guangxi. After the first Opium War, because of his mother's death, he returned to his former residence, and the manager joined the Bureau. In the 29th year of Daoguang (1849), he led his people to build doctor Xu baiting's family temple and mansion in Gaodi street. From then on, the area was named "Xu Di", which has been handed down to the present. In April of 2009, Wen Han, governor of Hong Kong and commander of the British army, reiterated the request of foreigners to enter Guangzhou city. Although they were refused by the Guangdong authorities, the British warships still intruded into the Pearl River to force their way into the city. Xu Xiangguang, together with the patriotic gentry in Guangzhou, took the lead in donating 60000 liang of silver, calling on the residents inside and outside the city to organize regiments to prepare for the war. In the name of the gentry of Guangdong, he wrote a letter to Wen Han, stating his interests and interests, which broke the British threat. In the end, Wenhan had no choice but to put up a notice in front of the foreign firm: "no British people are allowed to enter the city.". Xu Xiangguang's contribution to fighting against foreigners was later rewarded by the government, and he was given the top three titles of nobility. Scholars in Guangdong Province once presented plaques to praise his virtue of patriotism and defending the enemy. His seven sons were all elected, among them, Ying Rong successively held the posts of Linjiang magistrate, Jiangsu governor, Zhejiang governor, etc., and was praised as "Xu Qingtian" by the people. In the Qing Dynasty, there were also some famous political figures in the Xu family, such as Xu Yingqi, who served as secretary of the Ministry of industry and the Ministry of rites, Xu Yingqiang, who was clean and supported the reform movement of 1898, and Xu Bingzhen, who served as Consul General in San Francisco.
At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the Xu family was in decline. Many of the sixth generation Chongzi brothers joined Sun Yat Sen's revolutionary party and became the founders of the Republic of China, such as Xu Chongyi, Xu Chongzhi and Xu chonghao. During the period of the Republic of China, Xu Chongqing, a famous educator, Xu Ji, a famous general of the eastern expedition, Xu Zhuo, a famous general of the Red Army, Xu xizan, an underground worker who sneaked into the heart of the military organs of the Kuomintang, and Xu Guangping, a Chinese heroine, emerged. The rise and fall of the Xu family, as well as the experiences of various well-known figures of the Xu family, typically reflect the changes of Chinese society. In the early 1990s, yini, a female writer, wrote the experiences of many characters in the Xu family as a long documentary literature and a film. Later, dozens of descendants of the Xu family from home and abroad gathered at the Xu family temple in xudi, Gaodi street to find their roots. At the beginning of the 21st century, Lu Yanguang, a famous painter in Guangdong and chairman of Guangzhou Artists Association, published the first family in Guangzhou, which vividly reproduced many celebrities of the Xu family in ancient and modern times.
