Changsha Library

Located in the riverside Cultural Park of Xinhe Delta, Kaifu District, Changsha City, Changsha City library is a municipal public library organized by Changsha Municipal Party committee and government. It is a public welfare scientific, cultural and educational institution providing literature and information services for party and government organs, enterprises and institutions at all levels and the general public. It is also a civilized Library of Hunan Province. In May 2018, it was rated as a national first-class library.

Changsha library was founded in 1960. In July 1960, it merged the book lending office and youth reading room of Hunan Zhongshan Library (now Hunan Library) in Changsha Youth Palace and the children's reading room in Chaozong street with the library and children's reading room of Changsha culture center to establish an independent Changsha library, which was opened to the public on October 1 of the same year. In September 1975, it was opened to the public In June 1985, the new library of Changsha City was completed and officially opened on July 1, 1986.

As of December 2016, Changsha library has a total building area of 32000 square meters, 2076 reading seats and 8 departments. The total volume of the collection is 1.538 million, including 1.24 million paper documents and 287000 electronic documents.

Historical evolution

Changsha library was founded in 1960.

In July 1960, the Zhongshan Library of Hunan Province (now Hunan Library) delegated its book lending office and youth reading room in Changsha Youth Palace and children's reading room in Chaozong street to Changsha City. Changsha Municipal Party committee and government merged it with the library and children's reading room of Changsha cultural center to establish an independent Changsha library, which was opened to the public on October 1 of the same year.

In November 1960, Changsha library moved from the Youth Palace to 104 Zhongshan West Road (Pioneer Hall).

In April 1971, Changsha library moved to Xiangchun Road Worker's culture palace, merged with the city culture museum and the city worker's culture palace, and established the "Changsha workers, peasants and soldiers literature and art creation room", with a library group under it. It was reopened to the public on New Year's Day in 1972.

In September 1975, Changsha library restored its independent system.

Since 1979, the Changsha Municipal Library has been striving for more than 1 million yuan from the provincial and municipal governments to build a new library in Dingwangtai, a famous scenic spot in the city.

In June 1985, the first phase project of Changsha library was completed.

It was officially opened on July 1, 1986.

In December 2007, the new library of Changsha City officially broke the ground in the New River Delta Changsha riverside Cultural Park.

On December 28, 2015, the new museum officially opened.

According to the official website of the library in April 2020, Changsha library has set up 100 branch libraries, 7 24-hour self-service libraries, equipped with mobile library carts and 86 mobile service points in the city, realizing the one card "loan and return" lending service between the general branch libraries.

In 2016, it received more than 2.35 million readers, borrowed and returned more than 2.3 million books, carried out 618 activities, and won the title of national reading demonstration base in 2015.

In 2015, Changsha library purchased 662 kinds of small language books, 749 kinds of English books, 272 kinds of Hong Kong and Taiwan books, and more than 260000 yuan of optical discs. More than 1200 special books of "Sanxiang academician" and more than 600 local literatures were purchased. Order 10 kinds of Braille magazines, 357 kinds of Braille books, 100 tactile picture books, purchase visually impaired equipment and software. In 2016, we have completed the work of adding and subscribing to newspapers, with 3636 periodicals and 289 newspapers.

In 2015, there were 6 self built digital resource databases of Changsha books, including Changsha celebrity database, Changsha intangible cultural heritage database, digital resource Changsha cultural relics database, Changsha local literature and art database, and Xingcheng Science Lecture Video Database.

 

In 2016, the special literature reading room of Changsha City counted 35000 books. Purchase and collect more than ten thousand volumes of local literature, purchase digital resources such as Boyuan and CNKI. We strengthened the construction of the "East Asia literature and reference center", compiled nearly 2000 original foreign language books on the shelves, and ordered more than 80 new friendly city books. In 2018, Changsha introduced 4 new database resources, built its own Xiangsheng newspaper full-text database, and opened 15 external database resources for remote service. 40tb digital resources were purchased and 2.8tb video resources were recorded.
