Xianyue Pavilion

Xianyue Pavilion is located in Tingtao Scenic Area of East Lake Scenic Area in Wuhan City, on the long dike extending to the lake at the south end of the West Bank of the East Lake, opposite to Wuhan University across the lake. The pavilion is named after Su Lin's poem "near the water, you get the moon first".

Built in 1950, Xianyue Pavilion is a reinforced concrete imitation stone structure with a height of about 10 meters and a bottom diameter of 13.6 meters. It has an octagonal double eaves with a pointed roof, red columns and green tiles. It is surrounded by railings, with outstretched wings. It stands on a platform with a height of 0.9 meters, surrounded by water on three sides and decorated with sparse willows.

Yu Wenbao of the Song Dynasty wrote in his "record of a clear night": "in Qiantang, fan Wenzheng's Town, all the soldiers and officials were recommended, but Su Lin did not see the record when he inspected the town. He wrote a poem:" the moon comes first when you are near a water tower, and the spring comes when you are facing the sun. " Later, when Fan Zhongyan read Su Lin's poems, he would soon smile. He recited the poem "near water tower first get the moon, sunny flowers and trees are easy for spring", and fully understood Su Lin's implication. Yes! How can you forget him? Soon, Su Lin was promoted.

"Building near the water gets the moon first, and sunny flowers and trees are easy to spring", which means that the building near the water can see the projection of the moon first because there are no trees to block it; while the flowers and trees facing the sun have much better light, so they germinate early, which is the easiest to form a spring scene. These two poems are very implicit. They use natural scenery as a metaphor to describe the priority of getting close to something.

Xianyue Pavilion is located on the edge of the open east lake. It also has the beauty of getting the moon in the lake first.

Story of Xianyue Pavilion

Xianyue Pavilion is located in Tingtao Scenic Area of East Lake

Its predecessor is haiguang farm, the private garden of Mr. Zhou Cangbai, a famous patriotic banker in modern China. Zhou Cangbai, a close friend of the Communist Party of China, made many selfless contributions to the New Fourth Army and the Central Plains Liberation Army during the Anti Japanese War and the war of liberation. His son Zhou Deyou gave his young life for the Anti Japanese propaganda at the age of 18. In 1949, Zhou Cangbai took the initiative to hand over haiguang farm to the state.

In 1950, the East Lake scenic area began to be built. Haiguang farm became the first place to develop. Xianyue hall was built on an island called "mouse tail" in haiguang farm of East Lake. The construction of Xianyue hall is not only to beautify the scenery of the East Lake, but also to commemorate Zhou Cangbai, the "father of East Lake Tourism", and to commemorate his pioneering development of East Lake tourism. Mr. Zhou Cangbai's family is a memorable home of heroes. His daughter, Zhou Xiaoyan, is a well-known contemporary celebrity who sang the Anti Japanese war song "Ballad of the Great Wall". Zhou Cangbai died in 1970 when he was a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference.

He and his wife (counsellor of the State Council, together with Deng Yingchao and Song Meiling in the Anti Japanese War) were buried in Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery.

Xianyue Pavilion is one of the most beautiful buildings near Donghu hotel in Wuhan. The eaves are emerald and the top is dark blue. Like two layers of lotus leaves rippling in the middle of the lake. The round window on the base has the implication of the eight trigrams in the book of changes. In addition to Zhongnanhai, the place where Chairman Mao lived for the longest time and received the most foreign guests was Wuhan East Lake Hotel. Mao Zedong also liked xianyueting the most. Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and other central leaders had rested here many times and received many international friends. No.1 Meiling, Wuhan East Lake Hotel, where Mao Zedong lived, became the office where he presided over the central conference, dealt with state affairs, and received foreign heads of state and friends in Han Dynasty.
