18 buildings
Eighteen teaching and engineering residences located in the southeast of Luojia mountainside of Wuhan University. The overall architectural style adopts the English country villa style, but each building has its own characteristics, a total of 18 buildings, and then four buildings are added. After the Japanese occupation of Wuhan, some villas were changed into Japanese style and one was demolished. (later people still used to call it 18 buildings)
historical background
Zhou Enlai's former residence and Guo Moruo's former residence are among them (No. 27, building 19, and No. 20, building 12, respectively). Zhou Enlai's former residence is a standard English Garden Villa with red tiles and blue bricks. The foundation is wide. The front and back of the house are surrounded by towering trees. There are several stone steps leading to the foot of the mountain. The villa is separated by two Gothic arched gateways with a delicate garden and a big banana tree planted between them. During the war in Wuhan, because of the second cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, the national government settled Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao to stay here. They often went for a walk by the East Lake. When Deng Yingchao was alive, someone suggested that this place should be built into a memorial hall, which she denied. Adjacent to Zhou Enlai's former residence is Huang Qixiang's former residence, who is also vice minister of the political department. Guo Moruo revisited his hometown in 1961 and took a picture in front of his former residence. He also mentioned this experience in his anti Japanese War memoir Hongbo Qu, saying that "the Wuhan University area outside Wuchang City should be regarded as the paradise of the three towns in Wuhan.". In addition, there is Su Xuelin's former residence, which looms between an old vine hanging in the air and the arm of an ancient tree. Yang duanliu, Xiong Guozao, GE Yanghuan, Liu Boping and GUI zhiting all lived here. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, most of the professors were forced to move out and live with lecturers and teaching assistants. After the beginning of the cultural revolution, the old professors were driven back to live together, and many people died unjustly. Zhang Yuntai and Cheng Qianfan live in the nine districts where "three households do not make up a village". After the cultural revolution, most of the old professors took the initiative to move out, and now some of the buildings are inhabited.
