Notre Dame hall in Sheshan

Sheshan Notre Dame hall is a famous Catholic Church in Shanghai. It is located on the top of Xishe mountain and is known as "the largest church in the Far East". It was first built by French missionaries in 1871, and then renovated several times. The present church was expanded in 1925.

The church is a European "Baroque" style building. Some of the building materials and decoration adopt traditional Chinese architectural techniques, which is the crystallization of the integration of Chinese and Western cultures. The Catholic Church is integrated with the hill, the outline is harmonious and natural, and the whole building plane is in Latin cross shape. There are 3000 seats in the church, which can accommodate nearly 4000 believers.

The main hall is made of marble, the windows are inlaid with colorful glass, and the top is covered with glazed tiles. On the tower, there are eight big clocks arranged according to certain notes, with the spire 38 meters high, and a statue of the Virgin Mary cast in red copper, 8 meters high.

In 1942, the Pope made Sheshan Catholic Church a "Temple", making it a holy place for Chinese Catholics to worship. There are 14 pavilions on the winding path from the foot of the mountain to the top of the mountain. In each pavilion, there is a relief of the crucifixion, three holy pavilions and a nave. When the believers go to Sheshan for pilgrimage, they have to follow the winding path step by step.
