Luhuan island is an island in Macao, China, covering an area of 8.07 square kilometers
With only about 28100 permanent residents, Macao has the lowest population density.
Compared with the hustle and bustle of Macao Peninsula and Taipa, Luhuan island still maintains its original natural scenery, with birds singing and flowers everywhere, beaches, walking paths, barbecue areas, etc., making it an ideal leisure and holiday resort for people.
Historical evolution
In 1553, the Portuguese began to enter Macao. Under the pretext of "the boat touched the wind and waves", they asked to "borrow from Macao to dry things". After bribery, they got the permission of Wang bona, vice envoy of Haidao, to build thatched cottages on the shore. Later, they gradually built brick houses and settled into villages. Ten years later, thousands of people and servants were recruited, which was almost equal to the Chinese in Macao.
In 1864, Luhuan Island, originally in Xiangshan County, Guangdong Province (now Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province), was occupied by Portugal and became a part of Macao. More than 100 years ago, when Macao had gradually become a trade intersection between China and the west, Luhuan island was still a place where pirates often haunted. At that time, the island was barren with weeds and steep terrain. Except for some hunters, it was deserted.
On July 12, 1910, during the negotiation between China and Portugal on the demarcation of Macao, an incident happened in the name of "suppressing bandits" on the island, in which the Portuguese army fought for more than a month. The incident originated in May 1910, when more than a dozen students in Xinning County, Guangdong Province, were abducted by bandits in Luhuan County, and were banned and ransomed. A victim surnamed Chen asked Ma Kui, the governor of Australia, for help. The Portuguese of Macao, who had the ambition to invade the whole island, took the opportunity to attack the pirates on July 12. As a result, the Portuguese army attacked Luhuan litchi Bay many times. After nearly a month, they boarded Luhuan island on August 4, rescued more than 10 students and other prisoners, and captured more than 450 bandits. Due to the fierce fighting, hundreds of residents on the island were killed and injured, and hundreds of village houses were destroyed by the fighting. After this fierce battle, the Portuguese really "occupied" luluan. The incident was called "the Luhuan Massacre" by historians.
In 1969, the road linking Taipa and Luhuan was finally completed. Luhuan island still maintains its original natural scenery, with birds singing and flowers everywhere, beaches, walking paths, barbecue areas and so on. It is filled with a fresh and natural scene, which forms a strong contrast with the bustling city. Luhuan has become an ideal leisure and holiday resort for people.
After the founding of the people's Republic of China, the Chinese people, through unremitting efforts and with the consent of the Portuguese government, decided to take back the sovereignty of Macao and establish the Macao Special Administrative Region in December 1999.
geographical environment
The terrain of Luhuan island is the highest in Australia, with rolling hills, most of which are more than 100 meters high, and most of them are concentrated in the central and eastern parts. The rock properties are mainly granite and volcanic rocks. Dieshitang mountain, 176.45 meters above sea level, is the highest point of Luhuan island and the highest peak in Australia. Because Luhuan is far away from the South China coast, the accumulation is slightly slower than that of taizai, the coastal water is deeper, the north coast is steep, the south coast is westward, and the Cape and beach alternate.

The temple was built in the Tongye period of the Qing Dynasty, more than 100 years ago. It is the most popular temple in Luhuan. In addition to worshiping Tan Xiansheng, the temple also houses a dragon boat made of whale bones, which is a cultural relic with a history of more than 100 years. It is said that touching the whale bone will bring good luck, so the faithful men and women will touch the keel by the way. A huge stone with the character "goose" outside the temple is also a characteristic mark in the area.
It was first built in 1862, the first year of Tongzhi in Qing Dynasty, and then rebuilt three times. The temple is small, but the ridge decoration and murals under the eaves are simple and characteristic. The "fish bone boat" in the temple is the treasure of the town temple. There is a turtle stone beside the temple, which is also very famous.
St Francis's Chapel
St. Francis's chapel was built in 1938. Its design is based on the baroque style of Macao's main churches. The exterior wall of the church is mainly milky white, with oval windows and bell tower. There is also a memorial to the victory over pirates in 1910 in front of the church. In addition, some of the most sacred relics in Asia are still stored in the church. The arm bones of Saint Francis are stored in a silver casket. After his missionary mission in Japan, the saint intended to enter China. He died on Shangchuan Island, 70 km away from Macao, in 1552.
During the persecution in Japan, 26 Catholic foreign and Japanese priests were crucified in Nagasaki in 1597, while hundreds of Japanese were killed in the "shimabara" revolution in 1637,
Some of the martyrs' bones were taken to Macao and stored in St. Paul's church. However, the whole St. Paul's Cathedral was destroyed by a fire. Therefore, these bones were transferred to the lobby for storage until 1974, and then moved to St. Francis's church for storage.
Heisha Beach
It is said that the black fine sand is caused by the black secondary mineral glauconite formed in the specific marine environment. Affected by the current, they are transported to the shore, and then carried to the beach by the wind and waves, making the original white beach become a charming and mysterious black beach. It is the largest natural bathing beach in Macao. As early as the 1930s, it has been developed to attract swimmers. Later, a large area of Casuarina trees was planted on the bank, which became an evergreen forest belt on the bank. It matched the black sand beach and was most suitable for outing, rowing and swimming. Four thousand years ago pottery was excavated on the shore, which is evidence of the ancestors' life in Macao. In recent years, new tourism facilities such as five-star hotels and golf courses have been built on the Bank of Heisha, which makes "stepping on the waves in Heisha" the icing on the cake.
During holidays, weekends and midsummer, tourists on Heisha beach are as busy as crucian carp. Near the entrance to the beach is black sand park.
