Guandu Bridge

--Guandu bridge is a bridge connecting Bali township of Taipei County and Guandu District of Beitou District of Taipei city. It is also the closest bridge to the sea in the Tanshui River Basin at present.

--In order to develop more convenient transportation, the Taiwan provincial government has built the first all welded steel arch bridge in Asia, which is 809 meters long.

--There is a sightseeing trail on the bridge, where visitors can enjoy the landscape of Danshui River.

Guandu Bridge

Guandu bridge is across the Tanshui River in Northern Taiwan, connecting Bali township of Xinbei city with Guandu of Beitou District of Taipei city. It is also the closest bridge to the sea in the Tanshui River Basin at present.

Historical evolution

In the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty, baliben aborigines who fled the pursuit of Xiaolong society and moved to xiaobaliben Society (today's Zhuwei area in Tanshui Town, Taipei County) built a rattan bridge in today's Guandu area in order to travel between the two sides of the Tanshui River. The history of this bridge is called "Guandu rattan bridge" or "Yongzheng rattan bridge". The rattan bridge did not exist for a long time. After that, we had to rely on ferries to cross the Tanshui River.

In 1976, Chiang Ching Kuo, who was then the head of the administrative department in Taiwan, instructed the Taiwan Provincial Highway Bureau to study the construction of a bridge in the area of Bali, Guandu, which can facilitate transportation and meet the needs of national defense. After the publicity of the drawings, the steel frame bridge design drawings jointly designed by Lin Tongyan international engineering consulting company and China Consulting Engineering Department stand out in the competition. The bridge started construction in April 1980 and was completed and opened to traffic on October 31, 1983.

Construction method

Because Guandu bridge is close to the estuary of Danshui River, in order to meet the needs of boat and flood discharge, the reinforced concrete bridge which is easy to construct and save money is abandoned, and the long-span steel frame bridge is the main bridge. The construction of three huge arches has become a difficult problem. Because it is expensive and not urgent to rent a barge to accommodate three huge arches from abroad, the construction contractor Tang Rong invented the tidal construction method. First, the three huge arches were welded on the barge, and the pier construction was carried out at the same time. After the completion of pier construction, the barge carrying the huge arch will be towed to the positioning point when the tide rises. When the water surface is lowered after the tide ebbs, the base of the huge arch will naturally be positioned to the pier, and then the barge will be removed, so that heavy lifting equipment is not required. Most of the steel for the main bridge is produced by China Iron and Steel Corporation.

Development prospects

At the downstream of Guandu bridge, that is, the estuary of Danshui River, a 1 km long tamjiang bridge is planned to be built to quickly connect the traffic flow from Xibin Expressway to the new town of Danhai. The design of cable-stayed bridge with long span is still under planning.
