On August 2, 2005, when experts from the Forestry Bureau conducted a routine physical examination on the ancient and famous trees in Huangshan, they found that the growth of "see off pine" was declining, and the two-year-old needles showed signs of yellowing. After discovering the danger of seeing off pine, he organized experts from all over the country to visit Huangshan five times and worked out a whole set of rescue measures. "Remove the ground cover within the range of roots to avoid competing for nutrition; dig ditches along the slope direction of rock mass to enhance ventilation; disinfect the soil to avoid invasion of pathogens; fill the pine forest soil with pine mycorrhizal fungi to increase nutrition; use rooting powder to promote root growth..." In order to save the "seeing off pine", all the methods that can be used to protect ancient trees have been used. For a long time, the garden bureau sent two professional forestry technicians to take care of the pine every day. "If a pine branch is determined to be a sample for observation, a pine needle will also be recorded." But the laws of nature could not be disobeyed after all. By the beginning of December 2005, all the leaves of the pine died.

There are two main reasons for the death of the pine: one is that the tree is too old, which is close to the life limit of Pinus taiwanensis; the other is that the condition of the pine is extremely bad, and it grows on a large natural rock. "Last year's Meiyu season, there was not a drop of rain in Huangshan." In the case of old age leading to the decline of resistance, encountering drought weather is the main reason why the pine is vulnerable.

After more than three months of investigation, the "successor" has been basically determined. In August 2005, the expert group carried out a comprehensive rescue of the pine, at the same time, the work of looking for a "successor" on the mountain has also started. "The candidate trees should be beautiful and healthy." Before the start of the search, the Bureau of landscape architecture defined two criteria: first, the tree should be beautiful and similar to the original pine, which is good for tourists to take photos; second, the tree should be relatively young and healthy, which is good for sustainable protection.

After more than three months, the eligible trees were basically selected - a 200 year old "successor tree", which is not only unique in shape and similar to the original tree, but also happens to belong to the "young and middle-aged" tree. "It's really very healthy."

Transplanting or not

Although experts have considered that the famous scenic spots should be preserved in the original place, they decided not to transplant the newly selected trees because the environment of the original "seeing off pine" was too bad. "The original pine grows on a big rock, only a little soil, and on the air outlet. After transplanting, the root system of the new tree can not be well penetrated into the stone crack, which will increase the risk. " Huangshan landscape administration has begun to create a new environment for seeing off pine.
