Memorial of Yuepu battle in Shanghai
The memorial of Yuepu battle in Shanghai is located on the west side of Wusongkou. It was built on May 15, 2002 to commemorate the Yuepu battle. It was established as a patriotic education base in 2003.
Yuepu is located in the west of Wusongkou, adjacent to the Yangtze River in the north and Huangpu River in the East. It is an important position to protect Wusong and Baoshan. The Kuomintang army built a dense group of reinforced concrete bunkers, and set up barriers such as barbed wire, trenches and mines. On May 13, 1949, the 87th and 85th divisions of the 29th army of the people's Liberation Army were ordered to attack Yuepu. Despite the enemy's strong fortifications and the superiority of the sea and air, our officers and men launched frequent attacks. After two days of fierce fighting, they captured Yuepu street at dawn on the 15th. The enemy made repeated counter attacks, and concentrated artillery bombardment with planes, tanks and warships. Yuepu was in ruins, and the officers and men of the 87th division always held their positions. On the 23rd, with the support of brother troops, Yuepu southeast highland was captured in one fell swoop, opening the door to Wusongkou, laying the foundation for the overall victory of the Shanghai campaign. Hu Wenjie, head of the 259 regiment, and nearly 2000 other officers and men died in the battle of Yuepu. On May 15, 2002, a memorial to the battle of Yuepu was built in Yuepu park. In 2003, Yuepu memorial was designated as the patriotic education base of Baoshan District by Baoshan District People's government.
