Sheshan Zhongshan Notre Dame Hall
Sheshan Zhongshan Notre Dame hall is located on the hillside of West Sheshan mountain, Songjiang District, Shanghai. Zhongshan Notre Dame hall in Sheshan was built in 1894. In 1863, the missionaries chose five bungalows on the hillside to build a sanatorium with a small hall. In the 20th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu, the small hall was rebuilt and named "Zhongshan Notre Dame hall". In 1870, Joseph Pavilion, Notre Dame Pavilion and Jesus' Sacred Heart Pavilion were built in the west square of Zhongshan Hall, which were collectively called "three saints Pavilion". Meanwhile, there were 14 bitter road pavilions on the way of climbing in Zhongshan Hall Square.
brief introduction
In 1907, a statue of "praying in the mountain garden of Jesus" was built on the top of the back steps of the square in the north of Zhongshan Hall. Since 1958, the church has stopped religious activities. In 1981, after renovation, religious activities resumed.
origin
In 1844, French Jesuit President nangelu came to Sheshan to survey the terrain. Seeing the ups and downs of the nine peaks and the quiet and unique environment of Sheshan, I imagined that a prayer house would be built here for the old and frail missionaries. In 1863, President erbi inherited father nangelu's will and bought a large mountain area on the south slope of the Western Sheshan mountain. He built a five bamboo cottage on the hillside as a resting place for missionaries. One of the five cottages has an altar and a holy niche, and the statue of the virgin is used as a small hall for missionaries who come here to rest At that time, in zhangpuqiao near Sheshan, many members of the church often came to this small hall to participate in mass. With the increasing number of believers participating in mass, the building and religious facilities of the church are gradually expanding. After the completion of the Greek cathedral at the top of Sheshan mountain in 1873, the number of pilgrims increased sharply every May. They have formed a traditional habit: when they go on a pilgrimage to the mountain, they first go to Zhongshan Hall to worship the Virgin Mary and show their filial love for her, and then line up to the mountain hall to ask for her kindness. In this way, the church in Zhongshan is too small. It seems that the rebuilding of Zhongshan church is imminent.
In 1894, the old church was finally demolished, and a new church with traditional Chinese style was built on the original foundation, which can accommodate more than 500 people. This is the present Zhongshan Notre Dame Church in Sheshan. At the same time, spacious accommodation and office space for clergy and staff at the entrance of the church have been built.
building structure
On both sides of the main entrance of Zhongshan Notre Dame hall in Sheshan, there is a pair of striking couplets: the first couplet is "the small hall is built on the hillside, and take a rest for a moment to rest filial piety ceremony", the second couplet is "the main hall is near the peak, and then climb a few steps to pray for mother's kindness". In front of the middle hall, there is a hall that can accommodate thousands of people, surrounded by railings and stone benches There are three pavilions in the square, namely, the pavilion of the holy heart of Jesus, the pavilion of the Virgin Mary, and the pavilion of Joseph. It was first built in 1870. It is solemn and elegant, and also a place for believers to pray.
Generally speaking, the pilgrims go to Sheshan to chant scriptures and pray in the middle hall, and then go up the mountain along the gongbaiku road. At the end of the pilgrimage, he entered the hall to attend mass. Finally, I went back to the "Sansheng Pavilion" to chant and pray. Only in this way can I count the wishes of pilgrims. Therefore, some Old Catholics said, "when you come to Sheshan, it's not a pilgrimage to just watch mass instead of chanting and praying in the Sansheng Pavilion."
It has a history of more than 150 years since the church was first built in Zhongshan, and more than 100 years since it was rebuilt. It is a pilgrimage site with complete facilities matching with the Notre Dame hall on the top of the mountain.
In 1981, the Shanghai Municipal People's government implemented the policy of freedom of religious belief and returned the church to the church, which was renovated by the Shanghai diocese, and the pilgrimage activities resumed the next year.
