Yue Lingsheng, a missionary of American Baptist Church in South America, set up Huaien hall, Minqiang middle school and Yan Mo's girls' middle school (now Beijiao middle school). In 1924, due to the sharp rise and appreciation of the land price of North Sichuan Road, the South American Baptist Church sold the original buildings and moved the two middle schools to North Baoxing road to build the "Baptist village". In addition, it allocated funds to build a four story building at 271 Dongbaoxing Road as the new site of Huaien hall and Huaien primary and secondary school. In December 1935, Wynne church invited Qi Qingcai to be a pastor until his death in 1990.
In 1937, when the battle of Songhu began, Hongkou became a battlefield. Huaien hall was forced to move to 32 wangjiasha garden, Lane 605, Zhiai Wenyi road. Due to the increasing number of believers, in 1940, the base at 375 Ximo Road (now North Shaanxi Road) was purchased, and the construction of the new hall began. By 1942, the new hall was completed, which can accommodate more than 1000 people. It is one of the main Christian churches in Shanghai.
