It was not until 1937 that Mrs. Huiming presided over the reconstruction of Guanyin Pavilion and changed its name to Longyin temple. It comes from the meaning that Guanyin came here to show the white dragon. It covers an area of more than two mu. It has three floors with double eaves, a lecture hall on the ground floor, a main hall on the second floor and a sutra Pavilion on the third floor.
brief introduction
Longyin temple was originally located on the East Bank of Hengjing, the old Minhang street in Shanghai. In 1995, the old street was planned to be rebuilt, and Longyin temple was moved to No. 1, Mindong road. It was first built in the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. According to the records of Tongzhi Shanghai county annals, during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, there was a statue of Guanyin floating from the Huangpu River, which was worshipped by the local people and supported by a pavilion. It was called "Guanyin Pavilion" at that time
After liberation, it was occupied by Minhang grass weaving factory and Street factory. In 1985, the religious policy was implemented and religious sites were returned. Due to the need of reconstruction of old Minhang street, the leaders of the Municipal Religious Bureau, the municipal Buddhist Association and the district religious office implemented the policy of demolishing one and building one through various coordination at the end of 1995. The Longyin temple was transferred to Minhang District of Shanghai, which is a dilapidated residential building. In February 1996, with the support of the government, Master Xin Hong, a graduate of the municipal Buddhist College, was appointed by the municipal Buddhist Association to undertake the restoration work. Now it's back again, full of incense and believers. In the future, it will expand the Mahavira hall to become one of the large-scale open places for Buddhist activities in Minhang District.
history
Longyin temple was originally located on the East Bank of Hengjing, the old Minhang street in Shanghai. In 1995, the old street was planned to be rebuilt, and Longyin temple was moved to No. 1, Mindong road. It was first built in the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. According to the records of Tongzhi Shanghai county annals, during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, a statue of Guanyin came from the Huangpu River and was offered back by the local people. It was called "Guanyin Pavilion" at that time. It is said that a big white snake with a thick and thin bowl mouth was seen in the chaijian room of Guanyin Pavilion swimming out of the chaijian room and slowly swam into the HENGJING river outside the gate In order to be the incarnation of the white dragon, he asked someone to carve a wooden dragon head and offer it to the pavilion. People from far and near heard that white dragon appeared in Guanyin Pavilion, and believers came in droves.
In February 1937, nun Huiming, the leader of Guanyin Pavilion, demolished and rebuilt Guanyin Pavilion and renamed it Longyin temple. In August of the same year, when Longyin temple was built, it was bombed by Japanese invaders. Both the front and back of Longyin temple were attacked by bombs. Nun Huiming was hit by this attack and died in a few days.
After 1949, Longyin temple was changed into grass weaving factory and Street factory in Minhang town. Until February 1996, master Xinhong, who graduated from Shanghai Buddhist College for the first time, was appointed by Shanghai Buddhist Association to repair Longyin temple. In April, with the support of the local government, the dilapidated houses were renovated, providing a place for the majority of believers to study. Therefore, every incense festival or Buddha's birthday, the Longyin temple was filled with cigarettes, chants and bells The drums burst. On Saturdays, there are also mages giving lectures for us, and the number of believers who come to the temple to study Buddhism is increasing day by day.
On August 31, 2011, the monks and nuns' residences on the north side of the main hall of Longyin Temple began to be demolished and rebuilt, and a six story dormitory is expected to be built.
