Shennongjia is located in the western border of Hubei Province, bordering Baokang County of Hubei Province in the East, Wushan County of Chongqing City in the west, Xingshan and Badong in the south, Fangxian and Zhushan in the north and Wudang in the north. The mountain peaks in the scenic area are above 3000 meters above sea level, which can be called "the roof of central China". On July 17, 2016, the 40th World Heritage conference held in Istanbul, Turkey, listed Shennongjia, Hubei Province, China, on the world heritage list, bringing the number of Chinese world heritage projects to 50.

Shennongjia is located at the junction of the second and third steps, in the western border of Hubei Province, adjacent to Baokang County, Xiangyang City, Hubei Province in the East, Wushan County, Chongqing City in the west, Three Gorges in the South and Wudang in the north.

Shennongjia is located at the eastern edge of the second step of China's terrain. It is composed of middle and high mountain landforms by the East extension of Daba Mountains. The mountains in the area are tall and gradually decrease from southwest to northeast. The average altitude of Shennongjia is 1700 meters. Most of the peaks are more than 1500 meters, including 6 peaks with an altitude of more than 3000 meters and more than 20 peaks with an altitude of more than 2500 meters. The highest peak, shennongding, is 3105.4 meters above sea level (revised to 3106.2 meters on September 21, 2011), becoming the first peak in central China. Therefore, Shennongjia is known as the "roof of central China". The sea level of Shizhu River in the southwest is only 398 meters, which is the lowest point in the territory, with a relative height difference of 2708.2 meters.

The climate of Shennongjia is about 1 ℃ lower for every 100 meters above sea level, with a seasonal difference of 3-4 days. With the increase of altitude, there are many climate types such as warm temperate zone, middle temperate zone and cold wave zone. The temperature of different places in the territory ranges from the lowest minus 20 ℃ in winter to the highest 37 ℃ in summer. Shennongjia National Nature Reserve
Shennongjia National Nature Reserve is located in the southwest of Shennongjia forest region, Hubei Province, with a total area of 70467 hectares. It is divided into two parts: the east part with Laojunshan as the center, covering an area of 10467 hectares, and the west part with Shennongjia and xiaoshennongjia as the center, covering an area of 60000 hectares.
Shennongjia National Nature Reserve is rich in biological species. The forest coverage rate is 98%. There are many vegetation types, such as evergreen broad-leaved forest, evergreen deciduous broad-leaved mixed forest, deciduous broad-leaved forest, coniferous broad-leaved mixed forest, coniferous forest, shrub, Fargesia and alpine meadow. It is the epitome of the main vegetation types in Eurasia from subtropical to cold temperate zone. According to incomplete statistics, there are 3216 species of higher vascular plants, 493 species of wild mammals, birds, fish and amphibians, and 4143 species of insects. Among them, 73 species of animals such as golden monkey and Golden Eagle are listed in the national key protected animal list. There are 259 species of wildlife under state protection that are beneficial or of important economic or scientific research value. There are six peaks with an altitude of more than 3000 meters in the reserve, forming the "roof of central China", which is the watershed between the Yangtze River and the Han River in Hubei Province. Shennongding, the highest peak at an altitude of 3105.4 meters, is "the first peak in Central China".
Shennongding scenic spot
Shennongding scenic spot is located in the southwest of Shennongjia. It takes the well preserved ecological environment of the nature reserve as the core, relies on the Three Gorges Shuangshen line, and features forest ecosystem and biodiversity. It is a natural ecotourism area with the theme of harmonious coexistence of human and nature. It is also a demonstration ecological landscape area constructed by the national forestry department. In 2002, it was rated as a 4A scenic spot by the National Tourism Administration, covering an area of 1.057 million mu, with six peaks above 3000 meters above sea level, forming the roof of central China. It has become a watershed between the Yangtze River and the Han River, and plays an important role in environmental protection, air purification, soil and water conservation. Its vertical characteristics of plants are obvious. Its main scenic spots are Xiaolongtan, jinhouling, Shennong Valley, banbiyan Watchtower, taiziya, etc.
Xiaolongtan is a comprehensive service area integrating food, housing, transportation, tourism, shopping and entertainment. There are wildlife rescue station and golden monkey dynamic video hall.
Jinhouling is 3019.4 meters above sea level, covering an area of about 5 square kilometers, with an average altitude of about 2500 meters. Its highest point is one of the six pillars of the "roof of central China". It is the main activity area of snub nosed monkeys in shennongding scenic area, and also a typical representative of hundreds of thousands of Mu virgin forest in Shennongjia.
Shennong Valley is 2785 meters above sea level. It connects the first peak in Central China in the East, Shennongjia in the west, jinhouling in the north and Banqiao River in the south. It is said that "if you can't get to Shennongjia in the mountains, you can't get to Shennongjia.".
Banbiyan, 2590 meters above sea level, is named for its steep mountain like Banbi. It is also a place where "savages" often appear and leave their traces. Banbiyan scenic spot is a typical primitive ecological distribution area of alpine vegetation, including alpine meadow, Fargesia, Alpine Rhododendron, primitive forest and stone forest with different forms. On the hillside, clusters of Alpine rhododendrons are scattered on the fluffy meadows. Where the breeze rises, large bamboo groves roll like waves, hissing. The footprints, hair and feces of "savages" were also found many times in the forest.
The watchtower is built on Wangnong mountain on the north slope of dashennongjia, with an altitude of 2949.7 meters. The tower was built on October 1, 1985, with a height of 13 meters and a reinforced concrete structure. It was originally a supporting facility for forest protection, fire prevention and forest pest observation in the nature reserve, providing services for tourists.
