Memorial Hall of the former site of the New Fourth Army headquarters in Hankou
Located at the intersection of Lugouqiao road and Shengli Street, Jiangan District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province (formerly No. 26, Dahe street, Hankou), the memorial hall of the former site of the New Fourth Army headquarters in Hankou covers an area of 500 square meters. It is an old two-story western style building with reinforced concrete structure. In 2006, Wuhan Municipal People's government appropriated special funds to restore the former site of Hankou military headquarters of the New Fourth Army according to its original appearance and opened it as a memorial hall. It is only after more than 60 years of dust laden historical relics that they can be re presented in front of future generations.
After the July 7th incident broke out in 1937, the Kuomintang and the Communist Party launched a second cooperation. The Kuomintang and the Communist party agreed to reorganize the Red Army guerrillas in eight southern provinces into Anti Japanese forces. On September 28, Ye Ting was appointed commander of the New Fourth Army of the National Revolutionary Army by Chiang Kai Shek. According to Mao Zedong's instruction that the army should temporarily live in Wuhan and set up offices in Nanchang and Fuzhou, Ye Ting started to prepare for the construction of the New Fourth Army headquarters at 26 Dahe street, Hankou on November 12. When Ye Ting first came to Wuhan to prepare for the establishment of the New Fourth Army, he had almost nothing but a certificate of appointment, a seal and 50000 yuan of start-up expenses. Therefore, he had to go to Hankow to establish the headquarters of the New Fourth Army. He is responsible for raising funds, buying guns and bullets, recruiting talents, arranging residence and so on.
Where is the headquarters of the New Fourth Army located in Hankou? Ye Ting had his own thoughts at that time. On the one hand, this place should be in the Japanese concession. Because there were a lot of Japanese expatriates living in the Japanese concession at that time. After the outbreak of the Anti Japanese War, these overseas Chinese left one after another, and their houses were seized as enemy property. Therefore, there is no need to spend money and there is no legal trouble in requisitioning these people's empty houses. On the other hand, this place should be close to the office of the Eighth Route Army. At that time, the CPC had set up an office of the Eighth Route Army at 89 Hankou middle street. Soon after, the Yangtze River Bureau of the CPC was also set up in the office, where Wang Ming, Zhou Enlai and other CPC leaders lived and worked. If the headquarters of the New Fourth Army can be close to the office of the Eighth Route Army, it will be more convenient to work together. For this reason, he once turned street by street in Hankou Japanese concession, looking house by house, and finally saw a Japanese style residential building at No. 26, Daiwa street, which was checked as enemy property. The two-story building is very close to the office of the Eighth Route Army. It's only a few minutes' walk. Ye Ting personally led people to open the door and put on the sign of the New Fourth Army of the national revolutionary army. In this way, the New Fourth Army had its own office.
In January 1938, because of the need of war, the new fourth army moved Wuhan military headquarters to Nanchang. The New Fourth Army Office in Hankou and all its work were taken over by the Wuhan Office of the Eighth Route Army. The fact that the first military headquarters of the New Fourth Army was in Hankou gradually became unknown to most people because of the fact that the military headquarters was only in Hankou for one month and the lack of historical archives in the war. It was not until 1995 that it was mentioned again.
In 1997, in order to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the New Fourth Army, the documentary "the iron New Fourth Army" was made, and the current address of the former site of the New Fourth Army headquarters in Hankou was preliminarily confirmed. It was not until 2002 that the site of the New Fourth Army headquarters in Hankou was finally determined and the name plate of the cultural relics protection unit was hung.
