The temple was built more than 1000 years ago in the period of emperor Renzong of Song Dynasty, that is, in Nanjing city of Liao Dynasty. It is a nunnery dedicated to the three saints in the west, so it is called Sansheng nunnery.
Part of the original courtyard space, now has become a new residential area homestead, fortunately, the overall survival.
In order to respect the wooden tenon structure for thousands of years, no nails were used on the walls.
The glazed tiles in the shape of Yuanbao and the "five spines and six beasts" on the eaves were donated by the Buddhist president Li Yuanhong in the early years of the Republic of China.
Scenery of the nunnery
Nancheng flavor
Sansheng nunnery is deep in the north of Taoranting in the south of Beijing. When I first arrived here, the lively atmosphere around Sansheng nunnery is obviously in contrast to the quiet one. It has the unique style of Nancheng, with the smell of fried cake and fried dough sticks. Although the pigeon whistle of yingjinger doesn't echo in your ears, you will find that there are many things that have not changed in Nancheng.
Marriage tree
There is a big difference between Sansheng nunnery and traditional temple in format. It's very special to sit in the East and face the West. The front yard of sansheng'an was transformed into a vegetarian restaurant and teahouse, called "Bodhi yuan". It's mainly vegetarian, and of course there are meat dishes.
There is a marriage tree in the backyard of Sansheng nunnery. The tall locust tree is covered with red silk thread. It can be seen that many people come here to seek marriage.
Secret place and secret history
Sansheng nunnery, built more than 1000 years ago, is a nunnery dedicated to the Western Sansheng nunnery, so it is called Sansheng nunnery. Sakyamuni, Amitabha and Avalokitesvara are worshipped in the front and rear halls.
According to historical records, the marriage tree in the nunnery was planted by a respected nun in Sansheng nunnery. During the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, Princess Chengyang was unable to marry her beloved, so she became a monk in Sansheng nunnery and planted this tree to send her love.
rest the feet
The nearest to Sansheng temple is of course Taoran Pavilion, but now the leaves have fallen and rowing is no longer enough. But it's also good to take a walk in the park.
The compassionate nunnery in the Taoran Pavilion is also a place that witnessed the Chinese revolution. Chairman Mao worked here and took a picture under the locust tree in front of the door.
If you say where you eat, there are some snack bars nearby. There are chain restaurants and youth restaurants at the intersection of Taoranting road and heiyaochang street. Those who like to go to Hutong can go to Hufang Road, Yong'an Road, and then go north through Zhushikou street to Dashilan.

Sansheng nunnery was a "Y" shaped street, which was not recorded in the local chronicles of the Qing Dynasty. The Taiyuan guide in the middle of the Republic of China said: "Sansheng nunnery, east to Haizibian, South to dongxiaoweiying, West to zhongjiaoweiying, youzixiang, Masheng lane." In the early 1950s, Youzi lane, Masheng lane, Yuanjia lane, west section of dongxiaoweiying, west section of xiaoyuanjia lane and west section of sansheng'an west exit were demolished and replaced by a new street "liuxiang South Road".
For the first time, T-shaped road in downtown Taiyuan has become a crossroads in urban construction.
The street name of Sansheng temple is actually the name of a Buddhist temple. The temple has disappeared for a long time, but the street name remains. The name of the street tells the world that the original nunnery hall in this street worships "the three saints of the west", so it is called "Sansheng nunnery".
The so-called "three saints" are called "three saints in the west" and "three saints in the East" in Buddhism. The three saints in the west, also known as "Amitabha sanzun", are Amitabha Buddha in the middle, Guanyin Bodhisattva in the left and dashizhi Bodhisattva in the right.
Amitabha is the main belief object of Pure Land Sect of Buddhism. He is called the leader of the Western Paradise. He can lead all living beings to the "Western Pure Land", so he is also called "Jieyin Buddha".
In addition, the so-called "three saints of the Orient" are the glazed Medicine Buddha, the sun Buddha on the left side and the moon Buddha on the right side.
In the census of place names in the 1980s, it was said that there were three sacred statues of Confucius, Laozi and Sakyamuni in Sansheng temple, which means "three religions come together". This is not true. Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as "unification of the three religions" or the word "unification of the three religions" in all Chinese sects. However, from the birth of Confucianism and Taoism in the spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period to the birth of Taoism in China and the coming of Buddhism in the west, these doctrines and doctrines, in the process of the localization of Buddhism and the development of Taoism, are objective and complementary, and have become an inseparable part of Chinese culture or Han culture, but there is no question of who belongs to whom. Up to now, Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism have their own systems, each of which has its own portal. How can they be unified?
From "Sansheng Temple" to "Sansheng Temple" street, it is difficult to tell whether there were temples or streets first. However, there seems to be no doubt that temples and streets were created after the Ming Dynasty. Before Ming Dynasty, it was the east wall of Taiyuan City in song and Jin Dynasties, and Haizi was a part of the moat outside the city. Moreover, the name of the street is derived from the name of the temple, and the context is clear, so there is no need to argue. Because the names of villages, communities, streets and alleys in China were gradually formed by the local aborigines in their life and production, and the officials did not care about them before the Republic of China. Perhaps, after the expansion of Taiyuan City in the Ming Dynasty, this piece of land entered the city, with residents living together for a long time, and the number of houses increased day by day, so it became streets and lanes. In this process, Buddhists also built temples here, and "Sansheng nunnery" was completed. So the name of "an" became the name of "Jie", which is reasonable.
According to the records of the census of place names at that time, the Sansheng nunnery we are looking for is "located on the east side of the north section of Liuxiang South Road." There are three exits in a "Y" shape, with a total length of about 330 meters and a width of about 6.6 meters. Most of the residential buildings in the block are old-fashioned tile roofed buildings, which have the traditional style of the old city of Taiyuan. Unfortunately, the appearance is no longer there, and it has become a dream in memory.
