Haidian District Library
Haidian District Library has a history of eighty-eight years. It is the only comprehensive public library in Haidian District. The predecessor of Haidian District Library is the western suburb reading office established in 1917 by the Academic Affairs Bureau of the capital.
From April 2017 to April 2018, the former Ministry of culture organized the sixth national evaluation and grading of public libraries at or above the county level. After evaluation, Haidian District Library is rated as a public library.
Historical evolution
In March 1950, the Beijing Municipal Administration of cultural undertakings established the tenth reading room for books and newspapers in the west of Haidian town. In December 1951, it was changed into Haidian District Cultural Center. In 1958, teachers and students of the Library Department of Peking University proposed to establish a district library. With the approval of Haidian District government, a new library building was built in No. 95, South Street, Haidian town. It officially opened on July 1 of that year. It is known as Haidian District Library externally and the library group of the District Cultural Center internally. During the cultural revolution, the library was occupied by department stores and moved to the Bayi school garden in Haidian town in 1970. In 1972, the Revolutionary Committee of Haidian District built a 680 square meter two-story building at 89 South Street of Haidian town as the library of Haidian District, which is still called the book group of the cultural center.
On March 21, 1979, Haidian District Government approved the separate establishment of Haidian District Library. On August 18, Haidian District Library was officially established.
In February 1984, the Municipal Planning Commission approved the construction of a 3500m five storey building in Haidian District Library. On December 26, 1989, Haidian District Library was reopened. The new library is located at No.19 Haidian Street, adjacent to the district government and the famous book city. The famous calligrapher Qigong inscribed the name of Haidian library.
In 2000, due to the needs of the construction of Zhongguancun West District, the library was demolished again. It moved into the new library in 2005 and reopened to readers on December 26, 2005. The new museum is located in the core area of Zhongguancun Park, address: 1-4 / F, block C, 16 Danling street, Haidian District.
