101 provincial road in Xinjiang

The 101 provincial highway in Xinjiang is also called national defense highway. It is a Tianshan highway built in the 1960s to prepare for war and prevent the attack of Soviet Union. The scenery is good and the road condition is bad, but it is a good route for photography, exploration, hiking and painting.

starting point

The starting point is at the fork of Xishan farm of national highway 216, more than 20 kilometers south of Urumqi, with coordinates of 43.40 and 87.26.

Not far west from Xishan farm, it is the geographical center of the Asian continent. After entering the Toutunhe River Valley, you can reach Miaoergou farm and Ashli Kazak township of Changji City in the south, and Toutunhe District of Urumqi City in the north. From the west of Liuhuanggou Town, you can enter the qicaishan gorge. The landform here is an earthquake fracture and wind erosion zone. All kinds of rocks and loess form a magnificent gorge scenery. The mountain has beautiful shapes, such as camel, lion, tiger, general, monkey, cave and so on. At the bottom of the gorge, there are occasional rivers flowing after mountain torrents.

From the fork of Santunhe coal mine into the grassland, the grassland here is almost paved with green felt, smooth ridges, stooping cattle, sheep and horses, as well as Kazakh herdsmen and their yurts, abandoned stone houses and sheep pens.

In the kangjiashimenzi village of queergou, Hutubi, there is a spectacular rock painting of reproduction worship, which was carved about 2000 years ago in the Wusun era for Kazakh ancestors. It is lifelike and shows the worship and admiration for male roots of this grassland nation since its history.

The grassland is a sea of colorful flowers. In summer, all kinds of flowers are in full bloom. The fenced grassland is waist deep. Driving in the Tianshan Mountains, there are always beautiful Kazakh pastures, such as stone ladder, queergou, quedong, lujiaowan, bayingou, etc.

Some of them are similar to kalajun, others are similar to AnJiHai Grand Canyon.

End

The end point is bayingou ranch in Wusu County, which connects National Highway 217 to qiaoerma in the south, 0 km to Yining, Korla and Kuqa, and to Dushanzi, Karamay and Altay in the north. There are many debris flows in the mountains, and there are many forks. Master one key point and drive along the S101 line.
