In 1918, in the name of "good neighbor Association", a charitable organization of "Health Department of Taiwan Governor's office", businessmen from China and Japan jointly invested and founded "Taiwan fraternity hospital Gulangyu branch", which was originally located in a villa building of "Church Road" on Gulangyu. In the following year, he founded the affiliated medical college and trained a group of excellent doctors, who will be active in Bo'ai hospital, Xiamen and Zhangzhou in the future. In the early 1930s, the hospital moved to the former site of "Haijing Hotel" on Lujiao Road, Gulangyu Island. The existing Pok Oi Hospital on the seashore of Lujiao road is a large-scale general hospital designed by Japanese architects. It started construction in 1934 and was completed in June 1935. The building covers an area of 11354 square meters, with a construction area of more than 4700 square meters. After the hospital was built and put into use, it is a medical institution with the most perfect medical equipment and the strongest technical force in Xiamen in 1930s. Architecture is an early modern architectural style that began to be popular in Japan in 1930s. The plane of the hospital building is designed as "day" shape to meet the functional requirements. There are two open-air patio areas in the central area of the building, one is the badminton court set up by the hospital, and the other is the outdoor activity space for inpatients. The exterior wall of the building is painted in light beige, matched with the edge decoration of deep Beige glazed tiles, and together with the interior decoration of the building, reflecting a strong Japanese style. At that time, the modern architectural form was the same as the image of the hospital using modern medical means to save lives and heal the wounded.
