Qianfo cliff, located 40 kilometers southeast of Jinan City, Shandong Province, is the main remains of Buddhist stone sculptures of Tang Dynasty in Shandong Province.

The origin of history

Qianfo cliff statues in Jinan, Shandong Province are Buddhist sculptures of the Tang Dynasty. Thousand Buddha cliff is in Liubu, Jinan.

Liubu is located 40 kilometers southeast of Jinan City, Shandong Province. The statues are concentrated in the northwest of simenta and the east foot of Baihu. It is the main remains of Buddhist stone sculptures of Tang Dynasty in Shandong Province. On the cliffs, 65 meters long and 8.5 meters high, are mainly cliff niches.

Layout structure

There are 6 small caves in Qianfo cliff. There are 214 statues of different sizes and 45 inscriptions. Among them, 10 are inscribed with the year names of Wude, Zhenguan, Xianqing, Yongchun and Wenming. For example, there are members of the Tang royal family, such as Princess Nanping, Li Fu, the king of Zhao, and Liu Xuanyi, the son-in-law of Zhao. There are also ordinary bureaucrats, monks and nuns, and the public. One Buddha is engraved in the cave, with a full and serene face, fine and flowing clothing patterns, and skillful carving techniques. Excavated in 657, the cave was built by Princess Nanping to pray for the deceased Emperor Taizong. Liu Xuanyi's statue niche, whose husband was the governor of Qizhou at that time, is located in the south of the central part of Qianfo cliff. The niche is decorated with Yingluo lintel and engraved with some magic beasts such as Lishi and lion. Most of them are carved in the early Tang Dynasty, and some of them are later works, which are basically well preserved.

There are two caves in the north of Qianfo cliff. In the south of the cave, there is a stone pillar in the middle of the door. Two giant Buddhas with a height of nearly 3 meters are engraved in the caves. They were created by Emperor Taizong in the third year of Xianqing by Zhao Wangfu, the 13th son of Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty. This group of sculptures was announced by the State Council as a national key cultural relics protection unit in 1988.

Statue Art

The content and form of Qianfo cliff statues are very simple. Apart from the two niches, all the other niches are the Buddha of Amitabha and Sakyamuni. The combination of one Buddha, two disciples and two Bodhisattvas has only one niche. The largest one is 2.8 meters, and the smaller one is only tens of centimeters. However, the carving is exquisite, delicate and realistic. The secularization tendency is obvious, which is a typical style of Tang Dynasty. For example, the statue of Nanping Princess Chang has a plump body, a round face, a slight smile, and a gentle and honest manner, just like a lady. The 73rd niche Buddha, 2.2 meters high, has a slightly long but plump face, eyes like squint, eyes down, nose straight and moderate, lips delicate and clear, and looks like contemplation, which makes people feel reserved and strict in a gentle and kind manner. It is well preserved and of high artistic value.
