Founding background
Fujian shipping administration bureau and Fujian shipping administration school, established in 1866, played an important role in modern Chinese history. Among them, it also has an important impact on the development and reform of China's maritime military concept.
After the Opium War, with the sound of Western invaders, Chinese people of insight began to look for the way to save the country and strengthen the country. Wei Yuan's thought of "learning from foreigners and improving skills to control foreigners" blew the horn for modern Chinese to learn from the west, and the military self-improvement movement rose. The officials of the Westernization Movement began with learning from the western idea of "building strong ships and cannons". While setting up factories to make ships and cannons, they also focused on establishing various educational institutions to train Chinese modern talents. Fuzhou shipping school was the first modern naval school in China, and also the first Naval Education Institution in Chinese history.
The establishment of Fujian shipping administration shows that the position of coastal defense in China's national defense is beginning to emerge. China's traditional national defense concept of valuing land over sea is changing.
Since 2004, in order to promote the shipping culture, Mawei District government has invested more than 6 million yuan in the overall revision of the Chinese Modern Naval Museum and renamed it as the Chinese shipping culture museum according to the strategic plan of Fuzhou municipal Party committee to "explore the shipping culture and break through Fuzhou tourism".
