Construction history
Initial history
Beijing Workers' gymnasium was built for the 26th World Table Tennis Championships held in Beijing in February 1961. The project was completed in 1961, and the gymnasium can accommodate 15000 spectators.
Venue expansion
As one of the "top ten buildings" in China in the 1950s, the worker's gymnasium has become slightly obsolete in the 21st century. Since it is the venue of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, it began to accept the renovation on May 26, 2006. The transformation retains the original appearance and structure to the greatest extent, only carries on the cleaning and whitewashing again, even the hollow decoration on the door can be retained. Even the old people who are familiar with the stadium will not feel strange. The biggest change in the appearance of the workers' Stadium comes from the replacement of the windows. The original windows of workers' sports can no longer meet the requirements of modern energy conservation and environmental protection. This reconstruction will be replaced by green aluminum alloy double glass windows.
Design concept
The design of Beijing worker's Gymnasium adopts the characteristics of strong column and weak beam, which reflects the design concept and specification of the former Soviet Union. After the world table tennis championships, the worker's gymnasium has become an important place for holding large-scale activities in Beijing, and has assumed the responsibility of an international gymnasium. Table tennis, basketball, volleyball and other major competitions are held here.
Venue structure
The ceiling is a spoke wheel suspension structure, with a span of 94 meters. There are 12000 fixed seats and 1000 temporary seats. In addition to the center hall, there are badminton hall and other special venues. Workers' Stadium is an important part of three groups of buildings: Beijing Workers' Stadium, Beijing Workers' Stadium and swimming pool. Beijing Workers' gymnasium has been built for a long time, and its design concept and structure are of symbolic significance.
The reformed workers' Gymnasium is used as the venue for boxing competition of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and judo competition for the blind of 2008 Paralympic Games, with 12000 fixed seats and 1000 temporary seats. The structural reinforcement and functional transformation of the workers' Gymnasium have been carried out. The diameter of the column section has been increased by 10 cm, which greatly increases the bearing capacity of the beam and slab, and can fully meet the needs of sports events. In addition, the worker's gymnasium will also add functions. In addition to the comprehensive renovation and renewal of ventilation, lighting, mechanical and electrical facilities, 240 press seats, more than 30 VIP seats and 40 square meters VIP lounge have been added, making the design of the gymnasium more humanized, safer and more comfortable. In addition, according to the evacuation of the venue and the diversion of different personnel, the west gate was added to the workers' gymnasium which originally had only the north gate, the east gate and the small South Gate. During the Olympic Games, athletes and staff will enter from the west gate, media and VIP personnel will enter from the south gate, and spectators will enter from the north gate and northwest gate. In addition, after the demolition of the village in the city outside the west side of the venue, it will be built into a parking lot that can accommodate 400 cars.
