Rag
In classical Indian music, the melody system (which is the main structure) is called RAGA, and the extremely complex beat system is called Tala.
"RAGA" (Sanskrit "RAGA", meaning passion.) Known as the soul of Indian classical music, it is also the basic tune of Indian classical music, and also the seed of melody. It's a framework of melody. There are many kinds of rags, each of which has its own unique scale, interval and melody segments, and expresses a certain meaning (rasa). However, rag itself is just a framework, which depends on the improvisation of musicians to enrich and improve.
brief introduction
Rag originally means color or passion. Therefore, rag attempts to lead the listener's emotions and feelings through the melody of a specific combination of notes. The basic melody composed of five to seven notes can make free changes.
There are 300 kinds of RAGA in northern India, but many of them have been lost. There are more than 80 kinds of RAGA that can be followed, and about 60 kinds are commonly used nowadays. Traditionally, whether it is singing or playing, the key point is decided by time, season and emotion. In the morning, noon, evening, spring, summer, autumn and winter, sadness, joy or worship can not be confused.
Rag is not only a fixed melody type, but also a competent Indian musician with the ability of composer due to the demands of time, more detailed and other abstract situations and emotions, and the control of improvisation skills, playing length and speed.
Tala is derived from Sanskrit. TA is the dance of the universe of taandava Siva, symbolizing the rhythm of the universe. La refers to the dance lashia of parbadi, the goddess of Shiva, which is called Tala. Tala is similar to the Western beat. In India, Tala is a rhythmic cycle containing a fixed number of beats India's Tara (beat) is very complicated. It is not calculated according to the number of unit beats in each measure. First of all, we should distinguish the number of unit beats in each sentence. From 6 beats (3 + 3), 7 beats (3 + 4), 8 beats (4 + 4), or 10 beats (2 + 3 + 2 + 3), 12 beats (6 + 6) and the most common 16 beats (4 + 4 + 4), hundreds of changes can be combined. India's Tara can be divided into equal value and unequal value.
As a result, Tala and RAGA are two indispensable pillars of Indian classical music. If you want to experience and appreciate Indian classical music, you can't be ignorant of Tara and rag.
