Conquer Erlang Mountain

It has always been the dream of the local people to conquer Erlang mountain and the natural moat. Up to now, there are old photos published in the pictorial of the people's Liberation Army on the walls of the houses at the foot of Erlang mountain. According to the pictorial, the soldiers of the 18th army of the people's Liberation Army who took part in road construction in those years were wearing thin cotton padded clothes and hanging on the hillside with ropes tied on them. One was holding a chisel and the other was waving a hammer. Apart from these simple tools, there was no mechanical equipment. Compared with modern mechanized road construction equipment, it is a world of difference.

It was under such difficult conditions that the officers and men of the 18th PLA Army spent four years to build a 2000 kilometer Sichuan Tibet highway, and at the same time paid the price of 4963 soldiers. Over the past 50 years, Chuanzang road has been continuously rebuilt and repaired, from gravel road to asphalt road. Tens of thousands of cars and people pass through this road, and hundreds of tons of goods are continuously transported into Tibet area from this road.

Tunnel to tunnel

In the twinkling of an eye, nearly 60 years later, the song "singing Erlang Mountain" has not been forgotten because of the passage of time. On the Sichuan Tibet highway, which has been incorporated into national highway 318, there is a tunnel Erlangshan highway tunnel.

The Erlangshan highway tunnel, with an elevation of 2948 meters, a tunnel site elevation of 2200 meters, a maximum buried depth of 748 meters and a main tunnel length of 4176 meters, was started in July 1996 and completed in December 2001. It is the longest, deepest buried, highest elevation and largest in-situ stress mountain highway tunnel in China.
