The only remaining tower in Guya Prefecture.
Yingwang tower was built in the first year of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty (AD 1851). It is a brick building. The tower is seven stories high and about 15 meters high. It is an octagonal vertical well type. The inner diameter of the first floor is about 3 meters. It can't be climbed inside. In recent years, due to the change of stratum, the tower body obviously inclines to the west, and the painted patterns have been blurred. However, the structure and bricks of the tower are still intact, and the typhoon of more than ten magnitude that repeatedly landed in Sanya can't help it.
Yingwang tower
Yingwang tower is located on the Western hillside of Yacheng Town, Sanya City, Hainan Province. It is an ancient tower that has experienced more than 160 years of wind and rain. It is known as "the first tower in the South China Sea".
Historical evolution
Yingwang tower was built in the first year of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty (1851), donated by Xu Yongming, the governor of Yazhou.
Cultural relics
Yingwang pagoda is a hexagonal seven level brick soil structure. It is about 20 meters high. The inner diameter of the bottom layer is 3 meters. It is hollow and has five ladders to climb. After years of weathering, the painted patterns have been blurred, but the Tasha, the body and the base are still in good condition.
Yingwang tower is more than 10 meters high. It has seven layers. From bottom to top, it becomes smaller layer by layer. When it reaches the top, it becomes a sharp top. Each floor is divided by three overlapping eaves extending outwards and surrounding the outer body of the tower. There are two layers of lace painting under the three fold floating eaves, which are orange red and gray black. The pattern is now mottled and indistinct.
Cultural relic value
As one of the Chinese cultural heritages, ancient pagodas were built in all dynasties in Hainan history. However, due to the war and the change of dynasties, there are few existing ancient pagodas. Because of this, Yingwang pagoda is more precious. Yingwang tower not only provides a direct basis for the study of Hainan civilization and architectural art, but also has tourism and sightseeing value. Now, looking all over Sanya, the only remaining tower in history is the Yingwang tower in Yacheng.
Development and protection
In the 1980s, Yingwang tower was established as a "cultural relic protection unit of Sanya City".
Yingwang tower is one of the second batch of provincial cultural relics protection units in Hainan Province announced in 2010.
As Yingwang tower is an important historic site in Hainan, Sanya Municipal government has decided to spend a lot of money to repair the tower, mainly to reinforce the tower. It is expected that the repair work will start in 2015.
Related pagodas
It turns out that there is an ancient pagoda named Wenfeng pagoda, which was built in the 1898 year of Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1778 A.D.), and destroyed by local people in 1980.
According to historical records, there were three pagodas in ancient Yazhou: Wenfeng pagoda, Xiguan pagoda and Yingwang pagoda. Wenfeng pagoda and Xiguan pagoda no longer exist due to the changes of time and historical reasons. Only Yingwang pagoda, which was donated by Xu Yongshao in the first year of Xianfeng, became the only remaining pagoda.
