history
Nanzhao used to be a powerful military kingdom in history, but it was only a small tribe, and its influence was only as big as a small town today. But later, relying on its military strength, it annexed other tribes around Erhai Lake (namely "Zhao") and expanded its territory to Erhai Lake. Until now, it expanded to Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Yunnan, and even Vietnam. Its territory area once reached 1073600 square kilometers, 27 times of Yunnan Province. It was in confrontation with Tang Dynasty and Tubo Dynasty at that time For nearly two hundred years. Nanzhao (formerly known as mengshezhao, because it is located in the south of the six imperial edicts, so it is called Nanzhao). Originally, it was just a tribe at the foot of Weishan mountain (equivalent to a small town today). Later, with the support of the Tang Dynasty, with its military strength, it merged other five imperial edicts around Erhai Lake and expanded its territory to Erhai Lake. After decades of painstaking efforts, it expanded its territory to the south of Sichuan, the whole territory of Yunnan, most of Guizhou, a part of Guangxi and the whole of Vietnam, and became a great country with 1073600 square kilometers, confronting Tang and Tubo. As Nanzhao Kingdom grew up in almost continuous wars, 89 years of its 249 year (653-902) Dynasty history were in war. There was the famous Tianbao war in history near Jindao. For this reason, Nanzhao state was called "military Empire" by later generations. However, the war is unpredictable, and it is difficult to predict the victory or defeat. In order to ensure that "advance can attack, retreat can defend", the Nanzhao King City was equipped with military defense function in the construction process, in case of losing in the war. In view of this, the Nanzhao palace adopted "military defense function" as an important parameter (basis) in its planning, which was reflected in four aspects: first, the external walls were folded up and down, solid and thick, with bright lines, to prevent climbing; second, there were arrow buttresses (parapets) around the roof for defense; third, "watchtower" was set at the highest part (left) of the main building of the palace, Fourth, there is a "beacon tower" on the right top of the main building to report the military situation. The arrow shaped bricks in the courtyard are also used to reflect the military accumulation.
